Book Description

It's all about that second chance...

The Way They Were is Book Two of That Second Chance Series. (These are stand-alone books tied together by a common theme—belief in the beauty of that second chance.)

They promised to love one another forever, but tragedy tore them apart. Now, destiny just may bring them back together.

At eighteen, Rourke Flannigan and Kate Redmond thought they’d spend the rest of their lives together—until a family tragedy tore them apart. Fourteen years have passed, and they’ve both carved out separate lives hundreds of miles apart—hers as a wife and mother, his as a successful, driven businessman. But once a year, Kate pulls out a red velvet journal and writes a letter, which she’ll never send, to the man who still owns her heart. Once a year, on the anniversary of the first and only night they made love, Rourke permits himself to read the annual investigative report detailing an ordinary day in Kate’s life.
When a subcontractor at one of Rourke’s holding companies is killed, Rourke decides to pay the widow a visit and offer condolences, never dreaming the widow will be Kate. As they embark on a cautious journey of rediscovery, one far greater than they could have imagined, secrets and lies threaten to destroy their newfound closeness—forever.

BONUS: An Excerpt from Simple Riches, That Second Chance Series, Book Three.

Book One: Pulling Home
Book Two: The Way They Were
Book Three: Simple Riches
Book Four: Paradise Found

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

As with all of my books, THE WAY THEY WERE underwent several revisions. I clipped and tweaked, added, deleted, and pretty much drove myself crazy trying to get just the right feel, tone, and words for this story. I really enjoyed using Kate's journal and Rourke's investigative reports to give readers a deeper insight into their true emotions. I hope you enjoy them, too.

From the Inside Flap

"He's back."

Kate's brush slipped, smearing red paint onto the gray siding of the miniature dollhouse. Damn. She snatched a rag and began dabbing at the red spot.

She dabbed harder as if she could blot out Angie's words. "I heard you."

Kate glanced up, proud of the outward calm she displayed when her insides were a jumble of panic.
"And what?"

"Oh for heaven's sake, it's me you're talking to here, the one who sat up with you for three nights straight after that jerk left." Angie swore under her breath and muttered, "He didn't even have the decency to say good-bye."

"It was a long time ago." Fourteen years in July.

Angie Sorrento was a pint size dynamo with a giant sized temper who swore in Italian and English and could carry a grudge longer than anyone Kate had ever known. The only grudge larger than the one Angie had for Rourke Flannigan was the one relegated to the ex-fiancé who skipped out on her three days before the wedding.

"Really, Angie. Fourteen years is ancient history."

Angie's dark eyes narrowed. "That's what I'm worried about, Kate. Your history with Mr. Jerk."

"There's no need to worry." Kate dipped her brush in red and filled in the trim along the roof. This house was a four bedroom cape cod, designed for Rachel and Jared Hennessy and their seven year old twins, Jeffrey and Jason. The family had relocated from Richmond, Virginia last year so Jared could teach Sophomore English and coach basketball in Montpelier. Great family -- devoted couple, beautiful kids . . . even a golden retriever named Jed.

Angie started up again. "Even if it weren't Mr. Holier than Thou, let me grace you with my presence in this Podunk town, and even if said man-boy weren't someone you'd been intimately involved with, I'd still be worried."

"Unnecessarily." Kate ignored the way her pulse skittered when Angie talked about him

"You're vulnerable."

"Stop." Her pulse tripled.

"You buried Clay five months ago. That makes you a lonely widow. The perfect target."

"You watch too many Lifetime movies." Had he heard about Clay? That was ridiculous, how could he have heard? She had no idea where he lived and now, suddenly, he was here. Why?
"Katie? Are you all right?"

No, she wasn't. She hadn't been all right since--Kate pushed the unwelcome truth away and glanced at her friend. "I'm fine."

"Fine is code word for no. Look, I know you don't want to talk about him, but there are some things you've got to know before this guy comes waltzing back into your life."

"He's hardly waltzing back into my life--"

"Steamrolling then. You just wait and see."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great romance story.....4.5 stars January 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first boook I read from this author and it won't be my last! This book was enjoyable, it had all the great elements I look for in a romance book: good story, drama, sadness, steamy scenes, heart warming moments, good guys and bad guys. This is the story of Rourke and Kate, who lived in a small town in NY, were so in love with each other and promised to love each other forever at the age of 18. One night, after they made love for the first time, tragedy happens that tears them both apart and they don't hear from each other after that. 14 years later, we see that they both have moved on: Kate married, has her own business and has a daughter. Rourke finished school and is now a very rich, successful and famous eligible bachelor in Chicago living the big life.

Their lives cross path again when Kate's husband Clay dies in an accident working at a construction site. She and her daughter are grieving and are considering sueing for Clay's death. Rourke never suspected that the widow of the man who died on one of his construction site was Kate's husband. Suddenly the need to see her took over and he goes to his old town in NY to seek Kate out. The moment he saw Kate after all those years, his intentions became blury, all he knew was that he wanted to get to know her again and be part of her life again; whether she sued him or not.

There are so many obstacles between them: secrets from the past, secrets from the present, lies, their different lives and even their own family and friends are against them yet they cannot seem to stay away from each other.

Book is about second chances, reuniting with your unrequited love and getting your happily ever after when you think your life is falling apart, again. Great little read! There were many enjoyable characters who added to this story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Back and Forth January 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story line for this book just went back and forth. She decides she loves him, then she's not sure...just on and on like that for the entire book. This doesn't stop her from having sex with the guy plenty of times. If it weren't for the strong male character, I wouldn't have finished reading the book. Frankly, the heroine character needed to grow up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful October 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Kate and Rouke were young, in love and making promises of forever. Then one night, tragedy and lies cause them to separate and life goes on......
Fourteen years later, another tragedy causes Kate and Rouke to meet again. When they first see each other, they both know that they never stopped loving each other but there are too many secrets and lies they have to overcome before they can trust one another.
Mystery, secrets, lies and steamy romance! It's the perfect story!

2.0 out of 5 stars had potential but fell short February 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I agree with the other two star had potential but just fell short and it was difficult to make myself finish the book. I loved the journal enteries and the private eye reports but the dialouge between the h and H was not engaging. Way too much time spent on dialouge with secretary and I could not feel any real emotional connection between any of the characters....h & H, h & daughter, H & daughter ect. Also, if you are trying to win back the love/obsession of your life, why would you let your current bed partner hang around? This is always a pet peeve of mine in romance books......the hero treating the ex or current girlfriend like he can't stand her, but he remembers what good sex they had in many many places. This for me makes a very weak and the heroine was just as weak. Even for free I would not waste my time.

I typically try not to have a spoiler when I review a book, but it's necessary in order to explain how I rated this book. Overall, this is disappointing as it came highly-recommended by several people on my blog.

The basic outline of this novel had the potential to hit a home run: summer fling when you're 18 that is unresolved, your heart longs for that person for over a decade, you have a chance to reunite and the sparks start flying all combined with resentful family on both sides and a child born from the fling when you're 18. Sounds like a great plot for a Nicholas Sparks blockbuster book and movie.

However (vs. the traditional "but"), the author totally loses it in my opinion almost from the beginning: in a random town, the husband of the former girlfriend is a subcontractor on the former boyfriend's construction job and he dies on the jobsite, all of this combined with the old boyfriend is one of the richest and most popular men in the USA and the world, yet no one knows the construction company is owned by the old boyfriend. The statistical probability of that happening is probably incalculable.

To further compound the b.s. factor, the old boyfriend comes to this small town to "assist" the former girlfriend / new widow as she reviews her legal options but in reality for the former boyfriend to prevent a lawsuit against his company. If this happened in real life, the minute the fact the former boyfriend was acting this way said company would be writing a large check for settlement purposes. All of these actions are happening six months after the husband's death, but no one - including all of the plaintiff's attorneys - have been able to determine the former boyfriend (and construction magnate) owns the construction company. Come on!

More About the Author

Mary Campisi writes emotion-packed books about second chances. Whether contemporary romances, women's fiction, or Regency historicals, her books all center on belief in the beauty of that second chance.

Mary should have known she'd become a writer when at age thirteen she began changing the ending to all the books she read. It took several years and a number of jobs, including registered nurse, receptionist in a swanky hair salon, accounts payable clerk, and practice manager in an OB/GYN office, for her to rediscover writing. Enter a mouse-less computer, a floppy disk, and a dream large enough to fill a zip drive. The rest of the story lives on in every book she writes.

When she's not working on her craft or following the lives of five young adult children, Mary's digging in the dirt with her flowers and herbs, cooking, reading, walking her rescue lab mix, Cooper, or, on the perfect day, riding off into the sunset with her very own hero/husband on his Ultra Limited aka Harley.

Mary has published with Kensington, Carina Press, and The Wild Rose Press. She has recently released A Family Affair: Summer, Book 3 in the popular family saga series, Truth In Lies. Mary is currently working on A Family Affair: Fall, Book 4.
