Book Description

"Indeed, the world hates everyone, but oh does it hate me worst of all!"

In the wondrous age of the Internet, Rikka Oddadottir is an average teenager making good grades and decent friends. But it is all a façade. To Rikka, the world is a boring, passionless place, but when she arrives home, her world changes and she becomes awesum_v0m1t, the girl of her dreams.

Under her sacred username, awesum_v0m1t is a blogger, camwhore, chess master, mischief-maker and fantasy photographer seen and followed by millions. The isolation and intimacy of the online world becomes Rikka’s sanctuary, where she eventually discovers that awesum_v0m1t is the definition of true love.

One night, Rikka comes to inevitable terms with the reality that her affair with awesum_v0m1t is a forbidden love--one she will never obtain outside the computer screen. The only escape is suicide, but before she attempts, the world takes a dark turn. A sadistic online stalker, a religious old man and a series of gruesome nightmares will send Rikka on an odyssey of unspeakable suffering to obtain the greatest love of all—herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super original and intriguing August 3, 2014

THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE INTERNET introduces one of the most unique and intricate female characters I've come across in a while. A true poster girl of the Youtube/Facebook generation, Rikka is more alive and connected than anyone on the planet. At the same time, her entire life is spent online, to the point that she becomes dead to the real world.

For over 300 pages, you're stuck inside the head of a lonely, suicidal and maniacal teenage girl who loves no one but herself. The author spends pages describing Rikka as she takes a selfie in the mirror and models herself on webcam for thousands of online viewers around the world. But as I kept reading, I started to realize that Rikka isn't just another attention seeker. Instead, she has discovered true love beyond human comprehension, and holds a key to romance that has never been felt before. The suffering that Rikka endures is as intense as it gets. To anyone who appreciates an original story and a truly independent character, this book might even be too much for you.

An online stripper who takes selfies all day, but she can't bring herself to look in the mirror. She's haunted by violent, perverted nightmares and wants to kill herself, but at the same time, she believes she's some sort of god. It's refreshing to come across a female character that breaks through the mold and stands far above all other young female characters. Rikka doesn't identify with women and doesn't love men. At first, I couldn't understand why, but eventually it became clear. She's in love with herself.

This book doesn't just take you into a suicidal teenager's mind. It pits true love against religion and turns the protagonist's real life battle into an epic quest for her own version of salvation. So many dystopic novels try to blend reality and fantasy to create their own world, but the author somehow manages to create dystopia by simply making the real world a terrifying nightmare in the protagonist's mind. The author does such a good job of showing how the Internet can take us away from everything in life and lock us into an alternate world that is all about us.
