I usually do not give a 5 Star rating to a book that has some glaring flaws, but I make an exception here. The author's attempt to recapture the theology and worship of the first Messianic Jews from just past the apostolic era onward is of great interest, even if quite speculative. I really appreciated the author's personal warmth and sincerity. I would enjoy fellowship with such a man. This is NOT your typical book; I love books that stretch in new directions and are anchored to Jewish Roots.

The author gives us a taste of some archeological finds from what may be some early Messianic Synagogues, finds which are amazing. And he treats this section fairly, being clear to point to his conclusions as possible. He also includes a lot of sources in the appendix, including the Odes of Solomon and quotations from the Church Fathers quoting the Hebrew Gospel of Matthew.

While addressing the practices, beliefs, and rituals of the early Messianic Jewish community, Fischer draws on ancient church historians, the writings of the church fathers (including the Didache), and the clues of archeology to suggest some possibilities. He suggests that these early believers sung from the "Odes of Solomon." They may have, but we must remember that because some Jewish congregations may have done this (or other things he suggests)does not mean that Jewish congregations were uniform -- or even that most Messianic Jews embraced these things.

His reminder that the form of Judaism we have today is based upon Rabbinic Judaism, not the only Judaism of the first century. Thus, we are hasty to equate Rabbinic Judaism with the Judaism which formulated the New Testament.

A MHM Book Review

As many of you know, I love to read. When I get a hold of a book I feel is really really good, I like to share my wonderful experience by writing an Mayim Hayim Ministry Book Review.

"THE WAYS OF THE WAY - Restoring the Jewish Roots of the Modern Church," by Raymond Robert Fischer is just such a book. After I finished reading this wonderful 368 page book, all I could say for a week or so was "WOW, this is a 5 *****star must read book for all my students." Really anyone who wants to understand the first century Believers Way of life more fully should read this book.

THE WAYS OF THE WAY - Restoring the Jewish Roots of the Modern Church is PLUM full of things that blessed me, and in more ways than one, I know Dr. Bob Fischer; he is a scholar, and I think this is the finest of his six books to date. And if you know Dr. Fischer or have read any of his books, you know they are both a compelling and an easy read. Although I must admit, I did read some of his chapters more than once, but I did so in order to pull all the possible juice out of them I could. Good stuff! And not only that, but the book has awesome pictures in it of things that apparently the Israeli government have covered up because they are in fact "Messianic." The Way was a viable sect of Judaism, the very first Believers in Yeshua. Many of the pictures in the book taken by Dr. Fischer are in color and show things that point to Yeshua and the First Believers living and worshiping in the Land.

Whether you are praying for "a real" move of God in the Church or Fellowship you attend, or just seeking after truth and maybe change from the ho hum position of your own life, this book may be just what you've been waiting for to stir you up again about God's Messiah!

This book does a great job of revealing the roots of Christianity as practised by the first century believers. Fischer has thoroughly reviewed the available literature and come up with a readable synopsis of many different facets of the practices of the early Christians.
If you want to understand the early church, this is one of the best resources to access that information.
The ceremony of baptism is a particularly interesting section detailing how this took place in the underground grottos beneath Jerusalem. However, Fischer deals with almost all aspects of the early believers practices from music to theology to organization to communion (Eucharist or Lord's Supper.)
Fischer has first-hand knowledge of the discovery of a messianic synagogue in the Tiberias area and includes impressive photographic evidence.

I first became acquainted with Dr. Fischer's unique research and writing with his book, "The Messianic Seal of the Jerusalem Church." He is very thorough in his research and very articulate in presenting his findings to us. I have read "The Ways of the Way" with interest and enthusiasm. In our society of mega-everything, including our churches, the way that the Jewish followers of Jesus were worshipping and the purpose of the worship and lifestyle have been lost. We have lost even the slightest contact with each other except through our small circle of friends. It is in these small groups where we can worship God, uplift each other, pray for each other and basically insure we each try to walk the way Jesus wanted us to walk.
It is very possible that when one reads this book there will be a tendency to think of it as a great historical review. Personally I believe the author is inviting us to return to the ways of the Way by establishing small groups of people who can become intimate with our God as He wanted and intimate with each other as he wanted. I think this takes time and commitment. But aren't we supposed to be spending time with each other and be committed to helping each other?
Dr. Fischer states that his first purpose is "to encourage the church to return to the model established for it by the Way on Mount Zion." (p. 8) He does a masterful job of showing us how to do just that.
