''Edwards enunciates with unusual clarity, which helps with a book published in 1776.'' --Talking Book Review

About the Author

ADAM SMITH (1723-1790) was born in a small village in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. He entered the University of Glasgow at age fourteen and later attended Balliol College at Oxford. After lecturing for a period, he held several teaching positions at the University of Glasgow. His greatest achievement was writing The Wealth of Nations, a five-book series that sought to reveal the true causes of prosperity and which established him as the father of contemporary economic thought.

Wonderful way of learning about the The Wealth of Nations.

The result is a very long book that is incredibly nuanced.

This product, The Wealth of Nations, Part 1, is a 2 disk CD set that is a course on the book, The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith. The 2 disks together are over 2.5 hours long and very stimulating. There is a narrator, Craig Deitschmann, with a great voice and several actors to speak the parts of Adam Smith, David Hume, James Boswell, and others.

I was actually looking for the book on CD and did not know this was a course, but I loved it. This course puts the book in context. It describes the historic context of England, Scotland, and France at this time. It explains why Smith wrote his book besides what the book says. There are many sections of the book read aloud in this course, but there are also numerous quotes from other books and articles, including quotes from Hume and from Smith's book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments.

This course also describes why the book is difficult to read: that the examples Smith uses are old, familiar to his readers but not us, that important statements are not located in the book where you would expect to find them. This course prepares you to study the book.

Now I also want to study the Scottish Enlightenment and I look forward to listening to the next CD set, Part 2.

The production of the CDs is good. Audio quality is good. It has 3 minute long tracks, which is very good if you use a portable CD player. The script was written by George H. Smith and he did a fabulous job. This audio book is from Blackstone Audio, Inc. and is part of the "Giants of Political Thought" series from Knowledge Products.

I've heard the Wealth of Nations was a tough read, now I feel better prepared to tackle it.

This course is also suitable for intellectually prepared high school students. I highly recommend this course.

Adam Smith obviously thought deeply about economics, and then traveled widely to find support for his ground-breaking theories. The result is a very long book that is incredibly nuanced. Such popular excerpts as "the pin factory" and "like an invisible hand" do little justice to the book -- just like quoting "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." does not substitute for reading "Gone with the Wind" or seeing the movie.
It is difficult to getting a good economic education today. The endless flow of government money in social science departments has twisted the subject. While modern economists use very precise methods to arrive at wildly inaccurate results, Smith dug and dug through economic records to find key patterns but did not seek the unrealistic equations that currently characterize the profession.
One final note on the reading: Work your way through a Jane Austin novel before attempting to read "The Wealth of N! ations." The language has changed in the past 200 years.

This is a great product. An entertaining examination of the life and ideas of an extremely important thinker. Multiple cast of voice actors gives this audiobook a real flavour of the time and place covered. Great for introduction or brushing-up.

Certainly not comprehensive, though.
