Editorial Reviews

Review

“Wonderfully weird and entertaining.” Esquire

“An utterly charming, silly, and heartily entertaining coming-of-age story about a man-boy who learns to believe in himself by reckoning with evil… a welcome antidote to heavy-handed millennial fiction. Instead of trying to find profundity in party conversation or making his readers shudder in melancholy recognition of their thwarted lives, The Weirdness finds virtue in absurdity. Thank goodness — or darkness — for that.” —Boston Globe

“A comedic literary thriller situated between the world of Harry Potter and the Brooklyn of Jonathan Ames, Bushnell’s debut effectively mines well-trodden terrain to unearth some dark gems.” —Publishers Weekly

“This book is wild. And smart. And hilarious. And weird … in all kinds of good ways. Prepare to be weirded out. And to enjoy it.”
Charles Yu, author of How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe

“Jeremy Bushnell has written an irreverent, chaotic, comically inventive novel that makes New York City look like the insane asylum some suspect it is. It steadfastly refuses to bore you, and by the end has something important to say about the way we dream.”
—William Giraldi, author of Busy Monsters

"A whimsical approach... an aspiring author in New York who wakes one day to find that Satan has just brewed him a cup of fair-trade coffee — and has a little deal to discuss."
Tampa Bay Times

The Weirdness manages to soar beyond the potentially familiar tropes of urban fantasy with a strong sense of style and character… Bushnell’s debut novel is a clever, darkly satiric tale of the devil, literary Brooklyn and the human penchant for underachievement.” Shelf Awareness

“[The Weirdness] is immensely entertaining, and more than being merely diverting, is truly funny.” Harvard Crimson

Many of the characters feel undeveloped, minus Lucifer and the protagonist.

I just finished The Weirdness, one of those books that you start reading and then can't put down because you need to know what happens next.

Billy Ridgeway is a failed writer until the devil shows up offering to publish him—in exchange for a favor. But if Billy can’t even get his girlfriend to return his calls, how can he possibly face a warlock and save the world? Full of hell wolves and even a higher power, The Weirdness is possibly the most original (and fun) novel of the year. —Jenn Ravey, Bloggers Recommend

I just finished The Weirdness, one of those books that you start reading and then can't put down because you need to know what happens next. The main character is Billy, someone everyone knows. He just can't seem to get his s*** together, but then he gets a visit from an Adversarial Manifestation, a.k.a. the Devil, capital "D". The book takes off from there, and I won't reveal any plot points, but I will say it made me laugh out loud in several places, and although Billy is a screw up, I came to really like him and appreciate his predicament. The action moves along at a brisk pace, and the twists and turns in the plot are fantastic. Nevertheless, the story holds together well. Pick this one up and you aren't likely to regret it. Can't wait to see what's next from this author.

I lost count of how many times I laughed out loud reading this book. Chock full of fascinating characters and loaded with unexpected twists and turns. This is not your average 'deal with the devil' story.

So, I read about one novel a week, this is by far my favorite for 2014. Bushnell has an amazing voice that carries throughout the book, not to mention how smart and funny it is. Well worth it.

This was an enjoyable read. Easy to both identify with and be amused by the main character, Billy Rideway. The book almost has the quality of a really good Kevin Smith movie.

The Weirdness is funny, engaging, suspenseful, and, yes, just weird enough to be wonderful. Meet Billy, who wakes up one morning to find the devil--charmingly named Lucifer Morningstar--in his living room brewing him some fair-trade coffee. The devil doesn't want Billy's soul, not exactly: he wants Billy to save the world. Read it now before it's made into the inevitable movie!

I'm still chuckling from an early scene in the book where the Devil is the only one who laughs at the protagonist's joke with one big haw. Overall, an amusing hipster version of good versus evil and a reminder to write what you know. Or at least what can hold your interest. This one held mine.

I really enjoyed this read. It's the kind of book that pulls one in and demands to be finished. The story kept me entertained and engaged so that I wasn't thinking ahead, trying to anticipate/spoil any twists before they happened. Trust the book and you'll have a lot of fun.
