Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

In The Well-Balanced Leader, top experiential, accelerated-learning trainer Ron Roberts shows you how to identify your strengths and weaknesses in the nine most critical behavioral areas. He helps you “unstick” yourself from behavioral patterns that damage your influence as a leader, your relationships with those you lead, and the effectiveness of your organization.

The Well-Balanced Leader provides valuable insight into the inner workings of great leadership, along with activities, games, and exercises to determine where you excel—and where you fall short. It empowers you to:

  • Strike a balance among the needs of the people you lead, your own needs, and the needs of the organization
  • Become more conscious of what motivates you, drives your behavior, and determines how you relate to others
  • Think before you speak and respond to every situation with measured behavior

With The Well-Balanced Leader, you’ll learn how to alter your behavior in ways that benefit your people, contribute value to your organization, and launch yourself to the highest level of success.

"The Well-Balanced Leader," a book by Ron Roberts (a well versed and influential trainer of executives), initially appeared as another self-help book for those of us inspiring to be more effective. When I saw that it came with an "assessment," I began to regret my purchase. As a leader and manager for over 25 years, I have done my share of assessments. Was this a failed investment?

First and foremost, the assessment was spot on. It confirmed some shortcomings I have as a leader (as evidenced by my latest performance review I received). HMMM. . .maybe Ron knows what he is talking about.

Here's the valuable part of the book...the assessment will pinpoint areas in your professional life that needs shoring up or fine tuning. Each chapter is devoted to a particular section of the assessment. For example, if the assessment states that you have a problem with "letting go," you can go to Chapter 8 and get great advice, tips, and exercises that will help you feel comfortable letting go and letting others assume control. The advice and tips are in-depth and very executable...you can put them into practice and make an immediate positive impact on your leadership.

The beauty of this book is that you could use it as the basis of a training problem for your peers and subordinates. The assessment is quick but thorough and the layout of the book can allow you to tailor a training plan for each of your people. This book will definitely become a cornerstone of my own professional training and my employees' self-development.

So...is this a self-help book? Yup. Is it worth the investment? Definitely. Should you buy and read it? I don't think you can afford not to.

Read on...learn...prosper.

It's obvious from the start of the Introduction that the author Ron Roberts is an experienced leadership trainer and coach. The Introduction unlike so many other books, tells you exactly what to expect and what to do to get the most from The Well-Balanced Leader. It also includes a short self-assessment so that your results quickly direct you to the sections of the book relevant to your needs (there's also a longer online version the reader can take although one has to pay for this). All of this in just four and a half pages.

The author's research suggests there are nine facets that relate to either an ego-centric or other-centric approach to leadership. The nice thing about these nine facets is irrespective of the research, they make intuitive sense. This makes it easier for the reader to accept the concepts and provides impetus for that all important buy-in to learning to become a well-balanced leader.

Roberts' coaching background is also evident in the way he directs you to one of the nine facets of leadership that you currently manage well in addition to those areas one needs to improve, to provide a balanced approach to learning.

This book is interactive learning at its best. Having been directed to the chapter that suits your needs, the reader is presented with explanations, cases and exercises to explore the various ways one might continue to employ, or master this particular aspect of leadership.

The book is well written and very easy to follow. I particularly liked the author's use of analogies and metaphors (that everyone can relate to) to make key points. For example, many authors have used the analogy of a car journey - Roberts does this particularly well to involve the reader in a leadership journey.

The author, Ron Roberts, is well qualified to deal with issues of ego and management. With counseling and corporate training experience, he is a unique voice in the management/leadership process. His book is titled "Egolibrium," which he defines as "the ability to toggle effectively between Ego-Centric and Other-Centric attitudes, values, and behaviors for the ultimate long-term strategic success of an organization."

The 9 areas he focuses on are certainly essential to leadership. He has defined his market well and appeals to those who are in management positions with strong ego's to tone it down. Balance is key, and he also preaches being conscious of your own behavior as a manager.

While the information is good, I think it works best for a specific type of manager . . . someone who is a little too ego-driven but still has enough humility to pick up a book like this. It would be immensely helpful for those folks and if you are in charge of corporate middle-management training, get this book for everyone working for you. You and your managers will learn important tips about balancing between ego and others (for instance, acceptance versus resistance). The exercises in each chapter will aid you and help you to implement these behaviors quickly.

If you are looking for a book that offers some very practical advice on building balance in a manager/leader's life, this book has what you are looking for. Be sure and check out the Guiding Principles section in the back for a quick summary of what to expect.
