I am a big fan of Andy Adams. Before embarking on his career as a writer he actually made a long trail drive (or several, I can't remember). I like first-hand accounts of the early days, and while this is fiction, it reads much like his "Log of a Cowboy" which recounts his own experiences.

This tale deals with some teenage boys who were orphaned and trying to stay alive on their parents' homestead, and the kind, generous and savvy older cowboys who helped them develop a career in the cattle business. Not only does Adams develop a good plot, he also develops rich characters and incredible sense of place.

If you like this kind of material, I highly recommend Noah Smithwick's "The Evolution of a State", a first-hand account of pre-Alamo Texas up to Texas' secession from the Union.

Another well-written first hand account is "Our Southern Highlanders".

Back to Andy Adams, you can't go wrong with anything he's written, and I am so glad the publisher made his out-of-print books available!
