Editorial Reviews

Review

"A worthwhile glimpse into the former USA's near-future."  -WRSA

"The US and the world is pretty much in the throws of a global depression... The Federal Government is impotent and the Mexican Narco terrorists have made moves on reclaiming most portions of the southwestern swath of the US... Throw in the usual third world antagonists  and I think you have a pretty damn good narrative." -Ad Parare

"I rarely recommend fiction written in the past century, but Archer's fiction is an exception that I highly recommend you check out."
-The Arctic Patriot

The interweaving story of Clayton, Barret and his men, Jake, and his brother, and William is keeping me wanting to know more .

Excellent plot development. Your letting the reader gain more knowledge of the how and why as the story goes on. I am glad you don't have "zombies" but are using what would be real world senarios.

I would consider it to be a novella. Keep up the good work. I would buy this is paperback as a whole when part 3 is finished.

A very big thank you for not using vulgar language. I have found good writing does not require it.

I didn't really dislike this book, but there was nothing in it to really drag me into the story. The characters were flat and without personality and the situations they found themselves in were predictable for the most part and did not make the reader want to rush out and buy the next installment to see how it turned out. Fortunately, Part I was free so I didn't lose anything but my time,
Even with my lack of enthusiasm for the book, I didn't really hate it, and I might even buy the next installment some day. Just not while I have something better to read.

The quote "Two types of people - opportunists and revoutionaries" caught my attention. "Need constitutionalists" in our society..

From drug wars to cattle thieves, this short book covers a lot in a few pages. Violence abounds with no let-up...

Makes one wonder if there will be a safe haven anywhere! Part 2 should supply some of these answers....

This is a difficult review for me. The setting of the story is interesting and worthy. The writing, while somewhat simplistic, was appropriate and easy-to-read. The actions scenes were well-written. The editing was satisfactory.

So why couldn't I give it a higher rating? It is in the marketing where it falls, in my opinion. Sold as "Part One," the "book" is never-the-less too short and inconclusive to really grab me. I didn't have time to invest in the characters, to really care about them. Part One was almost over before I started, and there wasn't any sort of natural conclusion.

I understand the author's strategy. Get us to try Part One, then we'll be hooked for the next two parts. However, if the next two parts are of equal depth and length as Part One, then together, you would have one somewhat short novel. But you would also have paid $8.97 for that novel. I might pay that much for a new book by one of my favorite authors, but I have never paid anywhere close to that for an indie author. I think the most I have paid was $5.99 for an 800-page book.

If I had been able to read the full novel, and since I paid $2.99 for Part One (which I guess I thought was still a stand-alone novel in its own right), I would happily have paid the same for the full thing, I think I would have been much more satisfied and would have been able to write a more comprehensive review.

I have no issue with the author's wordsmithing nor the storyline, hence the three stars I did give it. Given my feelings about the marketing and price, I could easily have given fewer stars, but I could see the potential in the full novel. I believe the full novel probably would be a worthy read.

(Edited: After I wrote this, I saw that the full novel is offered at $4.

Superb book, with multiple story lines centered about what very well may be a realistic glimpse into what could assuredly be our future - border wars in the south, an overwhelmed and increasingly tyrannical federal government opposing increasingly sovereign states, the social breakdown of society; it's all there in a remarkably well-written story. The Western Front is in the same class as James Wesley Rawles' or John Grits' novels, dynamic, gripping, as well as a great realistic story. Looking forward to the next edition of this book, if it continues along the same arc as the first part it will be a great read.

Alphecca Review: The Western Front, Part 1, by Archer Garrett.

Fueled by crushing economic times and unemployment, as well as a malevolent, violent, (Occupy Wall Street type) political organization, there are riots and food lines in major cities and urban areas throughout the United States.

Texas, nearly abandoned by the Federal Government for insisting on their state's rights, has become a further battleground as drug cartels from Mexico have pushed the border northward a hundred miles.

Relying on their own wits, moral courage, and belief in God, a group of well-defined characters struggle to survive amidst the chaos.

If this sounds similar to James Wesley, Rawles' <a href="[...] (link to my book review), it is but, The Western Front is it's own story and plot. A good one so far.

I've only read this, Part 1, and would definitely like to read the remaining two parts of the book. I guess that's the clever marketing strategy of offering it for free; to get you hooked. I am.

You need to get all 3 parts of this book as the 1st part will only make you want parts 2 & 3. It is a must read book and although a work of fiction, I could see some of the things happening with our economy and where it's headed, it appeared to me that the author is very well versed on what poor leadership will head if their agenda is somewhat different than what our country was formed as.
