Well this was a real departure for me. I am not normally one for futuristic action packed fiction. But... I was hooked from the beginning to the end. It is a very well written book and I will certainly read the sequel. It would make a fantastic film?!

Nick Jones has created a world that appears to predict our future, in all its scary technicolor. A book that you can't put down, the whisper of stars is a triumphant first novel. The sequel can't come quickly enough.

Editorial Reviews

THE PORTLAND BOOK REVIEW - 5 stars by Galina Roizman
The Whisper of Stars is an extraordinary offbeat sci-fi thriller.
The persuasive and smooth narrative grabs readers' attention. The book's strong structure and short but precise descriptions help it. The clean and firm sentences are detailed enough to influence readers' involvement in what is happening. There is a new, intriguing and unpredictable twist within every chapter which is amazingly convincing and believable. For a debut novel this is a marvelously powerful whisper and a captivating read!

Jones' debut sci-fi thriller masterfully blends espionage with ultra-cool technology. Jones keeps the story grounded by ensuring that some of the tech has alarming side effects and the story's open ending isn't a cliffhanger, but leaves room for a second installment. An action-packed sci-fi story that delivers on its promising concept.

Amazon top 500 reviewer
A debut author, self-published. And a really good read. There are so many writers out there trying to get there books seen, it's hard to choose which ones to try. I'd recommend this one. It's confident, it's fast-moving, the characters are sympathetic, the story is good.
One that teenagers might enjoy, but aimed at an adult market (some swearing/short sexual scenes but nothing graphic), it's a good addition to the genre.

All things considered, “The Whisper of Stars,” Book One of the Hibernation Series, is downright amazing. Its author is quite something, too. Nick Jones, previously unpublished, has, in his first book, has put one out of the park.

“The Whisper of Stars” is complete. All of the loose ends are convincingly tied up so that when you reach the end you are satisfied. Yet, while the end is satisfying, Jones, through the epilogue, leaves room so the first volume of this planned series can merge into the second. Indeed, if the author had wanted to leave the novel as a standalone, he could have done it as the ending works for a lone book, as well.

Jones makes you believe the characters are real so that you empathize with them. He pulls you into the novel and makes your reality the fantasy world he has created. In fact, you worry about the novel's hero, Jen, a hard-working, loyal police sergeant in the Duality Bureau. Jen is surrounded by a conspiracy of silence that touches everyone in the society Jones has created. The conspiracy is so deep that it envelops not only Jen's life but also her father's life. Dad's actions many years before created the conspiracy and he is its first victim.

Interestingly, though Dad should have protected his daughter from the conspiracy, he did not. Instead, he pulled his daughter deeply into the quagmire by placing a very deep memory in her subconscious relating to Project Hysteridae. The deep memory really never surfaces but is apparent in a sudden ability to control a powerful weapon she finds near her childhood home.

Dad apparently thought he could erase all traces of the weapon he created for Project Hysteridae. He made two mistakes: 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great "Star"t to a sci-fi series! @badwordplay October 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Do you know what there is a vast lacking of in my personal reading library? Great science fiction stories with female heroes. That's probably not true of the sci-fi genre in general, but in my personal collection, it was definitely sparse. Reading through the description, and some reviews, it definitely jumped out at me for a couple of reasons: Female protagonist, future sci-fi, and crime drama rolled into one! It's like reading three or four books at once! By reading this, the author is actually saving me time, so that's a plus.

IN 2091, one of the biggest problems that society has to deal with is the ridiculous rate of population growth that is threatening human's way of life. Things get so bad, in fact, that the government has to mandate "hibernation", since there is not enough food and other resources for everyone. And since hibernation is government mandated, no one wants to do it, so it needs to be enforced. Enter Jennifer Logan, a police office with the Duality Division, whose job it is to enforce these laws. But all is not what it seems when it comes to Jennifer, and she soon learns that the future of mankind depends on her.

When science fiction is effective in story-telling, it portrays a real-life problem in a way that fits the universe that is created. The over-population of the Earth is definitely a problem that the human race will have to address in the future, and are already experiencing some of the side effects of this problem, such as global warming, and limited resources. This book portrays these ideas in a very real way, and presents the plot and characters fantastically. Jennifer Logan is a very compelling main character, and I am very excited that this is the first story in a planned series. I am glad we will get more from this author in the future, and can't wait to see what we get next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind tricks! September 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This appears to be a first effort, and it is a good one. It is best described as lying somewhere between science fiction and fantasy (where depends on your definitions) and is set somewhere near the end of the 21st century. Human population has expanded intolerably, lifetimes are almost doubled, the planet is under pressure, and hence society has taken a novel way out: hibernation. Everyone volunteers to get an implanted chip and report at periodic intervals to be put to sleep, to wake up some time later so that the waking population at any time is at reasonable levels. Of course, criminals do not do this, as they fear they may not wake. There is also an illegal way out: swapping bodies. How that works is unclear because while one party benefits, the other party is not mentioned in the book. And there needs to be policing of this policy, and one such policewoman is Jennifer Logan. Jennifer's father had a secret that he buried before he died; Jennifer finds it: an object called a histeridae, and it has remarkable properties, including mind control. Unfortunately, the powers that be know she has found it, and they want it, meanwhile Jennifer finds all is not well with officialdom. Jennifer becomes hunted.

The story now becomes a basic chase/escape story coupled with a quest of Jennifer's to find out what is going on. There is the odd "hole" in the story, but if you overlook those you have a genuinely imaginative and exciting story, well-written, and with one of the better long action sequences that I have seen. The book is the first in a series, but it has a very clean ending, and can be considered self-contained, but with an incentive to wait for the next one. Definitely recommended.
