THE PORTLAND BOOK REVIEW - 5 stars by Galina Roizman

The Whisper of Stars is an extraordinary offbeat sci-fi thriller.
The persuasive and smooth narrative grabs readers' attention. The book's strong structure and short but precise descriptions help it. The clean and firm sentences are detailed enough to influence readers' involvement in what is happening. There is a new, intriguing and unpredictable twist within every chapter which is amazingly convincing and believable. For a debut novel this is a marvelously powerful whisper and a captivating read!

REVIEW FROM KIRKUS.COM

Jones' debut sci-fi thriller masterfully blends espionage with ultra-cool technology. Jones keeps the story grounded by ensuring that some of the tech has alarming side effects and the story's open ending isn't a cliffhanger, but leaves room for a second installment. An action-packed sci-fi story that delivers on its promising concept.

A debut author, self-published. And a really good read. There are so many writers out there trying to get there books seen, it's hard to choose which ones to try. I'd recommend this one. It's confident, it's fast-moving, the characters are sympathetic, the story is good.

One that teenagers might enjoy, but aimed at an adult market (some swearing/short sexual scenes but nothing graphic), it's a good addition to the genre.

In the future, the population has risen so that people are placed through a draft in hibernation periodically. There are few people that have actually seen the whole process.

The population has not been told certain parts of the procedure and a few people are questioning the process. Jennifer Logan works in the Duality department that enforces the hibernation selection. She and a coworker find out that during hibernation minds and memories are being manipulated. Their curiosity as they question what is actually happening of course leads to trouble. Jennifer has learned too much and is being hunted. As you can guess, many high profile, powerful people are involved and life gets interesting.

One plot twist is the black market selling or renting of bodies to extend their lives.

I found this book creative, interesting, and well thought out. Since this is a series not everything is wrapped up completely at the end but I’m sure you learn more in further books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Want to know more! Fun read. August 5, 2014

I downloaded this book for free, so I was happy to see that it was much better quality than most other free books, but felt like the ending didn't give enough. Otherwise, the character development was great, just could have used a lot more detail throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great page-turner October 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I always enjoy books like this. You know, classic escapism with a moral twist. And what’s even better, the prologue and chapter 1 start with a mystery and action. “The Whisper of Stars” is a story that takes place in the not so distant future, where climate change has made much of the earth unlivable for man and technology has transitioned from convenience to necessity. But necessary for whom? And oh what technology it is, from the ability to communicate mind to mind to ease of access to maps and locations to automated cars to night vision (and everything in between), the human race has become dependent on technology and we are living longer. In many cultures, the lifespans in this story is much too long and it has impacted the earth. So much so that there are mandatory hibernation periods to alleviate the pressures on available resources. Part science fiction, part international thriller, part government conspiracy, I found this story well thought out, intriguing and I couldn’t put it down.

If you are looking for an enjoyable read that will keep you turning those digital pages, then you definitely want to order a copy. You won’t be disappointed. This is well written and has all the elements of good storytelling. If I had to voice a dislike of this story, it’s that volume two isn’t out yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Sci Fi October 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Whisper of Stars is the first book of the Hibernation series. I have to say, it really drew me in and has me anxiously awaiting the next one.

I'm usually not a huge fan of sci-fi Thrillers, but I was told that this one was a must read, so I went ahead and purchased it. This is a pretty short read, but a highly addictive page turner. Nick Jones really knows how to draw readers in.

Jennifer Logan is apart of a unique type of crime division, named the Duality Division. This division has one goal in mind; to promote and enforce hibernation, since the world has become way too overpopulated. Jennifer Logan finds this to be pretty intriguing, but she soon learns about the flawed system and secrets surrounding it.

This book is more than just a classic sci-fi. It has fantasy mixed in it as well, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much. From start to finish, I truly couldn't put it down. Nick Jones is an excellent writer, and I look forward to reading his next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars ‘They want to tell you what to think’.... October 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The world of 2091 that Jen Logan lives in ticks along – overpopulation is dealt with by ’voluntary’ hibernation on a rotation basis by groups of the citizens, technology pervades every aspect of existence , the police department she works for deals with both – ensuring the hibernation laws are carried out and body cloning and mind replication are not done illegally. There’s camaraderie and joking like in any police team with friends and mentors and there’s action and tension as she pursues a suspect – life is pretty good, she supports the status quo – but matters change as the woman she’s pursuing inexplicably pushes a man in front of an oncoming tube train – an illegal body swap gone wrong. The second main character is introduced – Nathan O’Brien – his life has collapsed with the murder of his investigative journalist wife, he has nothing to live for, he wants revenge. The plot turns thriller as Jen is called by Peter Callaghan, police scientist, expert witness, technology genius – he’s discovered something he’s very worried by connected to hibernation and he needs to talk to her about it – the conspiracy unfolds and Jen’s life is never the same again.

A lot is packed into the beginning of the novel – the realities of the world of the end of the 21st Century, the characters and their background, so it’s a pretty dense read, but one I found very well done and very interesting. The multiple threads of the story move along to the point where they collide – it’s a kind of inevitability as the rules of the game the main characters were following change and they become, at least at first, unwilling allies. At this point the tempo really moves up – betrayal and pursuit, fear and confusion set the tone and there are new players we still have to understand.
