THE PORTLAND BOOK REVIEW - 5 stars by Galina Roizman

The Whisper of Stars is an extraordinary offbeat sci-fi thriller.
The persuasive and smooth narrative grabs readers' attention. The book's strong structure and short but precise descriptions help it. The clean and firm sentences are detailed enough to influence readers' involvement in what is happening. There is a new, intriguing and unpredictable twist within every chapter which is amazingly convincing and believable. For a debut novel this is a marvelously powerful whisper and a captivating read!

REVIEW FROM KIRKUS.COM

Jones' debut sci-fi thriller masterfully blends espionage with ultra-cool technology. Jones keeps the story grounded by ensuring that some of the tech has alarming side effects and the story's open ending isn't a cliffhanger, but leaves room for a second installment. An action-packed sci-fi story that delivers on its promising concept.

A debut author, self-published. And a really good read. There are so many writers out there trying to get there books seen, it's hard to choose which ones to try. I'd recommend this one. It's confident, it's fast-moving, the characters are sympathetic, the story is good.

One that teenagers might enjoy, but aimed at an adult market (some swearing/short sexual scenes but nothing graphic), it's a good addition to the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Humans must hibernate to survive August 25, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
British author Nick Jones makes a rather auspicious debut with his first full-length novel THE WHISPER OF STARS (his other publication is a short novella THE CALLING). Born in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire he now lives and writes in Gloucestershire where he also tinkers with music. His current chosen genre is science fiction stories with a overlay of fantasy, a genre he manages to deliver with a lively style - terse structure and dialogue that propels this story forward just the way successful sci-fi tales must read in order to keep the reader in the tonality of the tale.

THE WHISPER OF STARS (well named) concerns the mind and mind manipulation, altering synapses as thoughts move rapidly through the cerebrum. Jones opens his book with a fascinating concept - one Jacob Logan struggling in the year 2058 to secure a device of some sort out of a heavily guarded building in Cheltenham (home of the Government Communications Headquarters), a man with the ability to drive his thoughts into others' minds to alter his escape path. The seeds of the rest of the novel are thus planted. Jump forward 33 years to 2091 and we are set in a dystopian world (for those new to sci-fi novels, Dystopia definition - a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding). We encounter Duality Division cop Jennifer Logan (!) whose task it is to impose hibernation as a means of survival in this time of global warming and overgrowth of human population, and to uncover illegal cloning and mind replication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind tricks! September 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This appears to be a first effort, and it is a good one. It is best described as lying somewhere between science fiction and fantasy (where depends on your definitions) and is set somewhere near the end of the 21st century. Human population has expanded intolerably, lifetimes are almost doubled, the planet is under pressure, and hence society has taken a novel way out: hibernation. Everyone volunteers to get an implanted chip and report at periodic intervals to be put to sleep, to wake up some time later so that the waking population at any time is at reasonable levels. Of course, criminals do not do this, as they fear they may not wake. There is also an illegal way out: swapping bodies. How that works is unclear because while one party benefits, the other party is not mentioned in the book. And there needs to be policing of this policy, and one such policewoman is Jennifer Logan. Jennifer's father had a secret that he buried before he died; Jennifer finds it: an object called a histeridae, and it has remarkable properties, including mind control. Unfortunately, the powers that be know she has found it, and they want it, meanwhile Jennifer finds all is not well with officialdom. Jennifer becomes hunted.

The story now becomes a basic chase/escape story coupled with a quest of Jennifer's to find out what is going on. There is the odd "hole" in the story, but if you overlook those you have a genuinely imaginative and exciting story, well-written, and with one of the better long action sequences that I have seen. The book is the first in a series, but it has a very clean ending, and can be considered self-contained, but with an incentive to wait for the next one. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Dystopian Thriller August 23, 2014
By Karsun
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this dystopian type sci-fi thriller. It's about a woman named Jennifer Logan, who is part of an innovative type of crime division – the Duality Division. This division is to enforce hibernation since the population has grown out of control. That in itself is interesting enough but what she finds is that the system is flawed and secrets start to emerge that were set deep within her mind.

I'm a sucker for most dystopian books and this did not disappoint. The suspense is there, the thriller aspect is there, futuristic technology is there, and best of all, character development is most certainly a part of this novel.

I'm looking forward to other books by Nick Jones and will definitely be checking out what has been done in the past. If you love sci-fi, dystopian, thrillers, futuristic, or suspense, you'll love this book as well. Definitely a page turner from the start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death is a relative term September 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Whisper of Stars by Nick Jones is a 259 page sci-fi/fantasy novel. It has a Prologue, fifty-four chapters, an Epilogue and a short author’s note at the end. This is Jones’ debut novel. His next will be, The Embers of Hope, to be published in late 2014, followed by a new time-travel series to be released in episodes throughout 2015. I would keep this author on your list of must reads.
If you love time jumps, mind jumps and dystopian worlds then this is the book for you. Jones was able to blur the lines of sci-fi and fantasy so well that you begin to think that anything is possible. I loved that. There is excellent dialogue and character growth, and the plot is never dull. Highly recommended author.

"The Whisper of Stars" is an enjoyable book. It is well written, interesting and innovative.

I'm not usually one to go for novels containing "strong female characters" of this type, but Nick Jones has come up with a cracker in Jennifer Logan - she is totally believable, and while not entirely likeable (personal opinion!), I did find myself caring about what happened to her.

The only downside of the book for me, was that there are no characters to really get attached to.

I'm looking forward to the sequel which is due later this year.
