I bought this album because I am a Celtic Thunder fan and am especially fond of George's deep voice. I knew he was a balladeer from his bios and that has always been one of my favorite kinds of music. Even though I have never heard any of these songs, all of them have quickly become old favorites to me. Halifax Town, Glasgow, and The White Rose are historical and have made me interested in looking up Scotish and German history. Beeswing, On A Bus to St. Cloud, and Grace are stories of lost or unfullfilled love and are sung with so much emotion you cannot help but Let The Tears Flow. Burlington is Donaldson's failed early attemps at a singing career. Safe in The Harbour is everyone's dream and Hierarchy Blues could be how starting singers are treated by their more successful peers. There is something for everyone on this album and you will soon find yourself singing along with George since the words are printed on the insert. This is truly a beautiful album. The photography, arrangements, and choice of selections is something you will love and play over and over again. I don't think I have ever enjoyed an album as much as this one. In the Celtic Thunder shows his Scotish brogue is toned down, I suppose for American audiences, but on this album it comes through full and delightful. This sensitive, talented writer and singer have been hidden from the world far too long.I hope this is just the first of many more beautiful albums to come from this amazing artist. Get this album, you will be glad you did.

Thank you Amazon for bringing this album. Wanted to download MP3 version which was not available but did not take long to transfer from CD. Such a calm , soothing album with beautiful stories in song. Nice to be able to understand words and follow along with the printed words that are included. George Donaldson is outstanding in this album. Enjoy the Scottish brogue. If you have enjoyed his music with Celtic Thunder, you will fall in love with him on this album. Expensive CD but unique.

Though this is George Donaldson's first solo CD, this veteran singer/songwriter proves he's no novice and delivers a collection of songs that are honest, thought-provoking, and passionate. From the first song to the last, George takes us on a musical journey that leaves us feeling like we know him much better after we've experienced it. Like one of his greatest musical influences, Harry Chapin, George is a storyteller. And like all good storytellers, he knows how to make us care about the things he sings about. We remember and admire Harry right along with George when he sings "A Song For Harry Chapin." We smile as George sings of his love for his home in "Glasgow." And we share George's frustration and anger when he sings of persecution and injustice in "The White Rose" and "Halifax Town."
There's not a bad song on this CD. The four covers seem to have been carefully chosen to reflect George's personality as much as his original songs. "On a Bus to St. Cloud" stands out and shows George's tender, mellow side, as does "Safe in the Harbour." The beautiful harmonies of Glasgow vocalist, Erin Boyle, add the perfect touch to a CD that was well worth waiting for ... a CD that you'll want to hear again and again.

I think I love folk music so much because of the deep caring it reflects in captured moments and stories, and this is what I've found in THE WHITE ROSE, a deeply moving collection of ballads. The first song is a tribute to Harry Chapin, and the profound influence the songwriter and humanitarian had on George Donaldson. The album will take you through an account of a woman's courage to stand against holocaust in "The White Rose", to love for homeland roots in "Glasgow", into loneliness homesickness & battered dreams of "Burlington" and to release and redemption of "Let the Tears Flow." "Halifax Town" captures a heartbreaking moment of Scottish history (sadly repeated in many other times and places), and the perils of ego are on display in "Hierarchy Blues." George's songs reflect his poet's heart and invite us to reflect on some of the best and worst in human nature. (And if the songs are not enough, you will find a photo of George next to an Oscar Wilde quote at the end of the booklet that comes with the CD).
The songs alternate between those George has written and others well chosen for their beauty and heart, like the haunting "Bus to St Cloud" and "Grace." The only song I was already familiar with was "Safe in the Harbor" in which I found deepened meaning. Strings, whistles, pipes, piano, and of course guitar assist in the delivery of the songs as do the harmonies of Erin Boyle.
Like a musical song-quilt, this album will call you to think, to feel, and to care, and be better for it.

As a Celtic Thunder fan, and especially a George Donaldson fan, I couldn't wait to listen to George's first solo album, The White Rose. I wasn't disappointed. It is fantastic! His voice wraps itself around you like a warm embrace. His troubadour style is reminiscent of Harry Chapin, of whom he pays tribute in the first song. I absolutely love this album and highly recommend it!!!!

George Donaldson where have you been all my life!? This CD is to the heart and uplifting at the same time. I've been following George since the start of Celtic Thunder and have always enjoyed his stage presence and now we are so lucky to have the chance to hear his own music, in his own words. George's writing and singing talent's shine thru in this, his debut CD. When you purchase this cd you are buying a ticket to George's heart. I hope that you will enjoy The White Rose as much as I am.
