Editorial Reviews

There is no more significant a milestone in Rock Music than the 50th Anniversary. Alongside The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, THE WHO complete the holy trinity of British Rock bands that have the honor of celebrating that landmark. Through the decades, THE WHO redefined rock music as we know it and their influence continues in all areas of popular culture to this day. WHO HITS 50! is the definitive collection of the band's greatest tracks from their very first recordings as The High Numbers right up to the present day with the brand new track 'BE LUCKY.'

The Who's new 2-CD retrospective entitled The Who Hits 50 is a MUST FOR ALL WHO FANS!
Many fans are complaining/p*ssing and moaning "yet another collection" but this time it's a Who compilation on 2 CDs and covers the band's history and then some on this 2-CD set.
Also this collection (like the 2002 2-CD Ultimate Collection), all of the tracks have their original mixes (and not the Jon Astley 1990s remixes which some griped at) and the tracks were all painstakingly REMASTERED from the original tapes..
The song selection represents the best of guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend, lead singer Roger Daltrey and the late great bass player John Entwislte and the also sadly missed seemingly 4 armed and 4 legged drummer Keith Moon (five of the tracks feature his successor Kenney Jones and the final three current drummer Zak Starkey).
The group's first single as The High Numbers called "Zoot Suit" is included and is an excellent tune. Then we also have the two single A-sides "I Can't Explain' and "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere" from 1965 are included and are still classics 50 years on.
The Who's debut album My Generation is represented by two tracks which were the classic title cut and the UK hit "The Kids Are Alright" (this time in its full album version).
The band's two 1966 monster hit singles "Substitute" (a UK Top 5) and "I'm A Boy" (one of the first songs to tackle on child abuse) are included proving why The Who were one of England's great singles bands in the 1960s although those 1965/66 initially tanked here Stateside.

Who Hits Bulls Eye on 50th - 42 tracks - many of the early singles are presented in Mono - Zoot Suit/I Can't Explain/Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere/My Generation/Substitute/The Kids Are Alright/I'm A Boy/Happy Jack/The Last Time/Magic Bus - the remainder Stereo.

Interesting selection for this compilation - I'm not sure why 'The Last Time' was included? I can think of a number of other tracks to include - why not throw in a B side (Dog Part II, Baby Don't You Do It or Water?) - Trick Of The Light makes a compilation appearance - Won't Get Fooled Again is an Edit - Postcard (nice touch).

Nice to see the long version of 'Magic Bus' - previously only available on Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy Vinyl LP.

Boris the Spider is a new remix - it is noticeable in John's vocals.

1 new track included.

I would have liked a nice inlay booklet with a track by track notation but can't complain too much.

On the anniversary of The Who hitting 50 I decided to physically purchase my first Who compilation in many years. It's a doozie, for good and bad.

First the good: the mono singles of early hits and the full length version of "Magic Bus" are reasons for many to pick up this collection. The sound is good, and the selection is more varied than just a hits collection, including a cover of the Stones' "The Last Time," odd misses "Dogs" and "Call Me Lightning," and one of my favorite later songs by the Ox "Trick of the Light." Sound is very good throughout as well.

The bad: can anyone explain why the album it's Hard gets three cuts and Who Are You and Quadrophenia, Who by Numbers, even Face Dances just get two? Get rid of the title track "It's Hard" and place "Dreaming From the Waist," or "The Real Me," or even "Another Tricky Day" in the track order. I also don't know why they included the edited version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" when there is space for the full length version, as nature intended. The edit of "Real Good Looking Boy" didn't seem necessary, as it's one of the better latter day Who tracks. Surely any Who fans who've heard the album version of "Who Are You" aren't going to be offended by the word bleebed out in that song? And the edit of 'Boy' sounds clumsy as well.

All that said, it's a nice compilation with a new song and enough extras that it doesn't feel as if it's just another compilation. The sound is great and the track selection includes some long forgotten favorites such as "Relay" and one of my person faves "Slip Kid."

Compilation # 1000 or something like that of The WHO. Another repackaging of the WHO's Classics in time for the 50th Anniversary Tour. That being said. This is a Great Compilation. There are numerous positives and a few negatives.

First the Positives:
+ Outstanding Sound
+ This compilation spans the entire Career of the Who not just the MCA years
+ A few rare classic non album tracks included - Dogs, Relay, The Last Time
+ A New Who Song that is good
+ Extended version of Magic Bus

Now the Negatives:
+ Where is Long Live Rock? This should be included. (Cut one of the It's Hard Tracks)
+ Single Edits of Won't Get Fooled Again, Who are You and Real Good Looking Boy. (I get it, they are presenting the singles but come on!)
Bottom Line if you love the Who and have all of the albums you will have to have it and it is highly recommended.
If you are new to the WHO, Get the 2002 The WHO Ultimate Collection compilation. It is a better introduction by far. You will miss the Post 1982 stuff but At you will get all the classics and the full length versions of Wont Get Fooled Again and Who are You.

For all WHO Fans this one is Recommended!! Looking forward to the tour and seeing them in 2015!

I have a problem with the hits compilations continuing to be released, but I have zero problem with The Who touring still with Pino on bass and Zak Starkey or Scott DeVours on drums. The Who is still great live. Their 2013 Quadrophenia & More Tour show I saw in Tulsa was mind-blowing. Pete can... Read More

Is it still The Who?
I think the personalities and the celebrity of each Beatle is what made them and the band so unique-along with the music. The Who, while a fantastic rock band and enormously successful- the members do not have the star power of each Beatle. Even in death Lennon and Harrison are still massively... Read More

for once a decent compilation
Interesting that disc one contains many of the early singles in MONO - I am interested in collecting the mono recordings. I am trying to remember if The Who have included the mono versions on other releases. The list is better than I thought it would be.
