Public library book.

We sometimes forget that the loving support of another human is sometimes a great gift for the receiver and a great privilege for the giver. This book celebrates some we recognize as geniuses, and that aid was crucial – a vital aid rather than a detraction from their greatness. Each of the stories is told by a different author and each is illustrated by a different author. Altogether, a triumph.

In the foreword, Kurt Andersen describes Friedrich Engels, "one of history’s most extraordinary and improbable secret accomplices, a promising young man who signed on as second fiddle to an unpromising young man who became one of the nineteenth century’s most famous and consequential men of all; Karl Marx." At twenty-three, Engels befriended a cranky, excitable, scrounging twenty-five-year-old journalist and rabble-rouser – Marx – and became his lifelong collaborator) and patron. Engels kept his lucrative capitalist-tool day job for the next quarter century to support Marx.

Rothman and team write in the introduction: "Behind every great person there is someone who enabled his or her ascension. These friends, relatives, partners, muses, colleagues, coaches, assistants, lovers, teachers, and caretakers deserve some credit... When you consider your own life, there are dozens of people who have guided you along your path – whether a teacher from fifth grade who finally got you to raise your hand in class, a family friend who gave you your first camera, or that whiskey-sipping neighbor who’d tell you stories of his childhood. These relationships shape our lives, some lightly and others with more impact."

Not least important is the incredible number of times an intensely supportive woman helped a man achieve greatness.

I'm thrilled to have taken part in this collection of essays about the person BEHIND the famous person you know. Each has stunning art which complement the subject, a wide range of styles. A wonderful gift for anyone who enjoys art and a different kind of biographical approach.

Fantastic idea - very interesting book with great artwork. The words, however, are a bit too small. Little difficult to read!

"The Who, the What and the When" would be better titled, "Spouses, Sidekicks, Muses and Mentors" because such a title would be much more accurate. From Alfred Hitchcock's wife to Co Co Chanel's lover, to Thomas Watson (of Alexander Graham Bell fame) the editors of "The Who, the What and the When" provide the reader an essay about the "other one." The "other one" being a spouse, lover, friend or mentor, that helped the well-known individual become famous.

The essays are well-written and informative. Even though each essay is written by a different author, for the most part the text reads as if written by the same person. However, some of the so-called famous were unknown to this reviewer, making the "sidekick's" story somewhat irrelevant.

Each essay is accompanied by a stylized illustration of the famous person. Normally, this reviewer doesn't care much for stylized illustrations, but they work here.

This reviewer gives "The Who, the What, and the When" four stars. The few essays on the not-so-famous and the somewhat inaccurate title are not major flaws.

Most interesting book that is charmingly laid out, researched and written to show that even genius needs a push or two to succeed, not just now but always! Makes for an excellent gift and coffee table book. People of all ages would enjoy reading it.

This was such an interesting book that explores the people behind the people that you have heard about or have been intrigued about. Think about this as the people who made famous people great. The book goes into depth about these people and what they did to help their counterparts become greater. In many cases I would have to say that without many of these people the other people who they supported would not have come to notoriety. I found each of the essays to be intriguing and engaging. I was drawn in and found that I really enjoyed reading this to find out more about these people, but even more so, about the people that they were connected with. For anyone that enjoys history, this will share with you the unwritten history of so many people that should have been better known than they were!
