Review

“Men today face myriad choices when it comes to their prostate care and prostate treatments. Dr. H. Ballentine Carter brings his enormous talents and knowledge to help them in this groundbreaking new book. This book should be read by all men, and their loved ones, whether establishing a prostate health regimen or facing a prostate crisis.”
—Mehmet Oz, MD, Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Surgery, New York Presbyterian-Columbia Medical Center

“Dr. H. Ballentine Carter has been pioneering prostate treatment for his entire career. Now, he brings his ideas and knowledge to everyone—and the impact will be profound. This book changes the landscape in prostate health and improves people’s lives.”
—David B. Agus, MD, Professor of Medicine and Engineering, University of Southern California, and author of The End of Illness

“This is a comprehensive resource that will be a great help to all men and the people who love them. Dr. Carter takes men from infancy straight through their later years and clearly details what needs to be done to maintain optimal health. This is an essential guide—now more than ever.”
—Alan W. Partin, MD, PhD, Director and Professor, the Brady Urological Institute, the Johns Hopkins Hospital

“I have long been a fan of Dr. Carter’s research and witness to the personal care that he gives to all his patients. I’m grateful that he has now made available his hands-on experience to everyone in this easy-to-read, practical book that provides such good sense in an arena of medical decision making that too often is dominated by hype and fear.”
—Herbert Lepor, MD, Professor and Martin Spatz Chairman, Department of Urology, NYU School of Medicine

“The prostate, a small and enigmatic organ near the bladder in all male mammals, appears to be disproportionately afflicted by a bewildering collection of conditions as men age. This book captures the wisdom of Dr. H. Ballentine Carter, the most thoughtful urologist in the world today and a renowned expert on the detection, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of prostate diseases. Writing with Gerald Couzens, a seasoned medical author, the prostate health information delivered is not only definitive but remarkably accessible—with myth busters, red flags, and takeaways provided to guide as well as inform men confronting prostate diseases. The book is certain to become required reading for men of all ages, and for their loved ones, as they seek to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.”
—William G. Nelson, MD, PhD, Director, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Johns Hopkins Hospital

“This comprehensive resource will be for men what Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book is for women. Highly recommended.”

The prostate is a much-neglected organ among men. It is the source of great pleasure, and a vital part of the reproductive system. It is also a place where a great many men develop cancer. The factors that contribute to health and disease in this gland are many. But despite the importance of this deceptively small bit of anatomy, men do so little to keep it in top health. Most men are oblivious to what leads to good prostate health, and what can lead to prostate disease. For example, did you know that the wrong kind of bicycle seat can damage your prostate?

That's where this book steps in. It's a completely straightforward, no-nonsense guide to keeping your prostate in top health, all the time. Whether you are a young man or a venerable senior, the exercises, diet, and lifestyle information will help keep that vital gland in good shape.

This is one of those books that will be so useful to people who have begun the unnecessary decline wrongly associated with aging in our culture. (Get Fit in Bed: Tone Your Body & Calm Your Mind from the Comfort of Your Bed is another such book -- great if you've been "knocked down" by aging.) Even if you are in the "fixing the damage" stage rather than the prevention stage, you will find this book very helpful.

Using the internet to get educated about prostate issues is a frustrating experience. On one side, you have sites which are clearly pseudo science quackery and on the other side you have scientific papers which require a background in medicine and statistics to comprehend. The few useful sites, like Dr. Catalona's, are few and far between. Your primary care doctor will refer your questions to your urologist, and your urologist won't have the time to educate you properly. Dr. Carter, a leading urologist at Johns Hopkins, has taken the time to put in one volume a clear, well organized and very complete presentation of every aspect of mens' urologic health. To his credit, Dr. Carter includes lifestyle and dietary measures which can be taken to prevent prostate disease. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure": it's unusual to see a physician and surgeon offer this information, as doctors are compensated to treat disease, but not to prevent it. Dr. Carter goes though every possible issue that can arise in a man's genito-urinary tract, ranging from "overactive bladder" to prostate cancer, and describes in detail every possible treatment and the pros and cons of each. Even though the author has performed thousands of prostatectomies, he states unequivocally that prostate cancer is highly over treated in this country and explains how "active surveillance", a program he pioneered at Johns Hopkins, can be the best choice for many. The alphabet soup of acronyms you will encounter on this subject are fully decoded, and all the various procedures, their outcomes and their side effects, are fully described. About one man in six will be told at some point in his life that he has prostate cancer.Read more ›

This book is the most update so far and quite informative for all ages of men. I've been able to decide how to handle my prostate cancer with the help of this book. It takes time to read, but is a must for most prostate cancer men.

This book steps back to take a look at how to reduce your chances of ever being told you or someone you love has cancer AND how fast you must act to get the best outcome possible. There are a TON of internet resources, clinical settings and books on this topic. Urologists (all of them are surgeons) usually suggest surgery. Radiologist offer radiation. Oncologist offer hormone and chemotherapy options. There are so many choices with this type of cancer because there is not ONE single great choice. Each person must decide what they can accept or live with and make the best choice. The notion of eww eww it is cancer, get it out of me or can you live with this disease as though you had diabetes seems to be a big obstacle for many. All sources seem to agree (even the quackery sites and books) that diet and exercise play a key role in reducing the risk, growth and spread of prostate cancer. After scouring the internet and book options I opted for this one to bring all the information together in one place that we could review to make sensible, nonFEAR based decisions about healthcare choices. I highly suggest everyone read this book. As a side note, July 19, 2012 New Englad Journal of Medicine article suggests there may be little benefit to surgery for most men with prostate cancer that were studied in this report. Since this book was published prior to that date, consider whether or not you fall into the group that will truly benefit when making your choices.

Good basic information from a standard western medical perspecitve for the not so-well informed reader. Unfortunatley, well researched complementary medicine perspecitves were hardley even mentioned.
