Editorial Reviews

Review

“An absolutely gorgeous book by my favorite cake maker in the whole world.”
Jamie Oliver

“Claire Ptak creates the very best desserts: Simple, delicious, pure. This is a charming book that perfectly captures its subject.”
—Alice Waters

“Claire has taken store cupboard basics and turned them into a book of recipes so delicious you'll want to eat the pages.”
—April Bloomfield

“Claire Ptak is my favorite baker. Her competent yet whimsical style imbues everything she bakes—from a classic French apple tart to the humble whoopie pie—with a delicate magic.”
—David Tanis, author of A Platter of Figs and Heart of the Artichoke

"If you are getting bored with cupcakes and wondering what the next new baking fad will be, this book . . . will certainly contribute to the growing interest in whoopie pies. A far cry from soggy packaged cakes held together with marshmallow glue, these recipes are cause for delight. VERDICT With minimal baking skills and the all-important stand mixer, you can be the first in your neighborhood to bring homemade whoopie pies to the feast! Recommended."
Library Journal

“A cool approach from someone with impeccable credentials—and there's no denying the popularity of the whoopie pie genre.”
Bay Area Insider

We also loved the chocolate pies with marshmallow filling.

The ink color for the recipes and instructions is mercifully, black, so even with the small font size it is relatively easy to read.

I have a handful of whoopie pie recipe books and I am certain this one will be my absolute favorite.

Compared to my other Whoopie Pie cookbook, this one is user friendly -- at least for the first section of the book. A recipe for the cake is on one page and the suggested filling recipe follows on the next. Of course the user is free to mix-up cakes and fillings but it is nice to have the basics follow in sequential order rather than chapters filled with nothing but cakes and some filled with nothing but fillings so the user must jump from one section to the next.

The book is a paperback so it doesn't lay open flat on the countertop. The use of a cookbook holder might be helpful. The ink color for the recipes and instructions is mercifully, black, so even with the small font size it is relatively easy to read. The paper quality is good and promptly wiped-up spills did not sink in and cause permanent damage. There is a solid index in the back so locating a particular recipe is easy. The measurements are given in grams and ounces. The majority of necessary ingredients are readily available in grocery stores, but golden syrup will require a search.

I made the Carrot Cake Whoopie pie along with the recommended Orange Mascarpone Cream filling. The combination was excellent and I won't hesitate to prepare it again, although I plan to try other varieties.

Recipes included in the Simple and Sweet section of the book are Chocolate with Fluffy Marshmallow filling, Mocha-Orange with Espresso cream filling, Pumpkin with Cream Cheese filling, Strawberry with Strawberry buttercream, Chocolate Chip with Chocolate Marshmallow cream, Carrot Cake with Orange Mascarpone cream, Lemon Cream with Lemon Curd cream, Red Velvet with Old Fashioned buttercream and Salty Caramel with Caramel Swiss buttercream.

I have a handful of whoopie pie recipe books and I am certain this one will be my absolute favorite. I just got it and haven't actually started baking yet - part of the problem there is I want to make pretty much every recipe in the book!! Seriously... There is a great photo for every recipe. Instructions are broken down into steps and easy to read. Each recipe tells you how many large and mini whoopies it will make - LOVE that because I make both. I am a graphic designer and a baker - I give this book a complete thumbs up all around. Check out the "table of contents" on the "look inside" option to see all the great recipes!

I've bought a few and borrowed quite a few whoopie pie books from the library but I keep coming back to this one to being the best. Basic recipes in the beginning and I love all the different frosting recipes it contains. Every recipe has a photograph including the frosting recipes. I think it's one of the best books currently available on whoopies!!.

I borrowed this book from the library and made a few of the recipes before I committed to buying. I've made three of the recipes and have been pleased with the results of all three - lots of compliments from the kids and my coworkers. Most of the ingredients are commonplace, and the author does give alternatives in the few recipes with hard-to-find ingredients. I'm looking forward to making the oatmeal/ice cream combo. I made the chocolate cookie and paired it with the peanut butter filling - super good! Today I purchased the Kindle version for use on my iPad, and it's beautifully done; the print size is perfect.

This isn't an 'open a cake mix and doctor it up' cookbook. The lemon pies with lemon cream were wonderful! We also loved the chocolate pies with marshmallow filling. The Golden Syrup used in the marshmallow filling is very easy to make yourself, just google it, it's just sugar, water and lemon juice cooked down. These are the best Whoopie Pies we have ever tasted!

I purchased this book to learn the art of making whoopee pies. The recipes were a little to fancy for someone like me just starting out.
I purchased a beginners book. A lot of the recipes in this book were advanced. Not the classic book that I was looking for. I will be ready for this book soon.

It's a beautiful book and the pictures are amazing, but I have to wonder if the creator did more then just "chill" the batter because following the exact directions results in runny batter the minute the cookie sheets hits the oven, I had to add a LOT MORE flour then the recipes called for, and then they came out perfect!

I really like this book. Have not had time to try any recipes yet, but plan to do so soon. I bake for fund raisers, and these are the next things to try.
