Customer Reviews

I'm not sure if I will be reading volume 2.
Shirley Pento
Maybe the author used Wicca as marketing ploy, but that doesn't mean Wicca doesn't have real meaning to most people who follow the religion.
Raven Song
It's actually a really good story and the beginning of a great series!

The Book: The Wiccan Diaries, by T.D. McMichael

My Rating: 2 Ravens

Summary:

This story is about an un-athletic girl who, at the age of 17, moves away from home and meets a mysterious, athletic guy that she doesn't think she deserves. Girl cannot live without this guy (who she just met.) This mysterious guy stars at her a lot. He also appears to be angry with her. The girl falls in love with him and finds out that he wasn't really angry. He just wants to eat her, because he's a vampire and she smells tastier than anyone he's ever smelled before. But he resists because he loves her. There's also a werewolf that belongs to a special clan. Sound familiar?

No, it's not Twilight, but it's close.

What I liked:

Early on, the female lead, Hasley, has a unique, endearing, poetic voice that immediately snapped me into the story. Hasley's magic school is finally mentioned and explained, I was charmed by the idea of the magic school's abstinence policy. What a clever idea!

I also really loved the dialogue scene where Hasley finds out Lennox is a vampire. It was adorable! Hasley had a great personality, even though she is a lot like Bella Swan, she also had some of her own redeeming qualities. I adored some of the side characters as well: the landlady, the cabbie. They had unique and interesting personalities and voices. Even the setting was a real pleasure.

My impression of the first chapter had been that I enjoyed it, but I wasn't necessarily hooked into reading more. The funniest line in the book was when Lennox said, "Luckily, I cushioned the fall with my face." Some of the diary entries were cute, though I wouldn't call it a "Wiccan" diary.

Admittedly, I did not finish this book. I read about 2/3 of it. I rarely do not finish books I start, but this was positively painful. The book is a bad replication of the Twilight saga. The setting of Rome did make for some interesting moments and is what kept me reading for so long. The idea of a zombie strain was also interesting, but the characters were one dimensional with disjointed writing that is difficult to follow at times. I also don't believe the author ever decided what age group this book was aimed at. The vocabulary was a little advance for a children's or young adult novel, but the main character often used the phrase 'What the h?' This was quite irritating and did not match with the character's suggested age of 17.

It was ok but if asked I would not recommend it. I'm not sure if I will be reading volume 2.

Really enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to start volume 2. T.D. McMichael really has a way of telling stories. I have recommended both volumes to several friends.
