Review

"There's a good deal of madcap action and several embarrassing moments, and kids Sofie's age . . .  will be plenty amused." - Kirkus Reviews

For many authors, Book 2 New School would be the best book of their career. Except that Ms. Suerth has written a better book, which is book 1 of the same series. I am very surprised at Ms. Suerth's consistent delivery and quality of writing.

First, the good news. The second half of the book is a solid 5 stars. Things really get interesting and in many ways the second half of the book is better than book 1. It has pathos, dignity, and humor. The cousin Hannah spices things up a bit, the marriage adds a lot of interest. Its really nice to see Sofia realize there is life after your first BFF as she makes friends with both Hannah and Madison. And of course there is her bit with Andrew at the wedding. Lets all let out a long sigh of bliss together. :)

Now the not so good news. The first half is a bit slow to start, mostly because Suerth tackles some really tough issues all at the same time. Kudos for that. Angst, loneliness, jealousy, and a cold hard dose of reality hit Sofia as she experiences school shopping at a thrift store, is ostracized at school, and her relationship with Andrew goes nowhere. A lot of things that were built up in book one are not revisited to my satisfaction in the first few chapters, as if a relay runner fumbled the baton pass. While Sofia matures in a trial by fire, I found myself not enjoying it very much.

Suerth attacks these thorny issues with unflinching resolve and acquits herself admirably. I totally agree with the new direction and I think it really shows off Suerth's ability to write about difficult topics. But at the same time it lacked the consistent sparkle of book 1.

But as I said, by mid book everything starts to click again. Thats not to say that everything is perfect, far from it.

I read this 2nd book with my daughter and I really enjoyed it as much, if not more, than the 1st in the series. The author does such a great job of telling the story that you almost feel as if you're watching it rather than reading it. Sophie and her family are a funny bunch. Living with grandma is an adjustment for everyone...

Sure to make you laugh out loud (literally). Great for 2nd graders and beyond.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Wig by Renata Suerth is a self published 2013 release. This book is targeted for the middle grade reader. Sofia and her younger sister, Izzy is living with their grandmother, Ursula while their parents are away. Sofia is mortified when her grandmother waits until the last minute to purchase school supplies. By that time all the good stuff was gone. So, in need of a book bag, they wind up in a second hand store where grandma Ursula buys a new wig and a rather unique book bag for Sofia. So starts Sofia's new year in a new school. Grandma Ursula seems a little out of practice when it comes to raising kids. She is totally clueless about the embarrassment poor Sofia has endured and the difficulty in adjusting to her new environment. Izzy on the other hand is doing quite well, and Sofia is a little resentful. On top of all this Sofia has a crush on her neighbor, Andrew. The angst that goes along with this new feeling is also a little stressful. Hilarity ensues when Sofia is the victim of her sister's pranks, and her other grandmother announces she is going to remarry. Grandma Ursula is in charge of planning the reception if that gives you any idea which way things are about to go. I was approached by the author to review this book for her and I must admit I was a little hesitant. I haven't read middle grade books since I was in middle grade, and I promise you that was a really loooonnng time ago. I didn't know if I would be able to critique this type of book. Once I started reading it though, I found that there are some things that never change. As a child, my family moved around a great deal and I started new schools a lot. This brought back memories of the nervousness one feels when starting a new school and facing new people.

Sofie's adventures continue when she enrolls in her new school. The summer has ended. The temporary living arrangements with Grandma Ursula do not seem quite so transient any more. School time brings new challenges to the gutsy, indomitable fifth-grader - even after her younger sister pulls a really dirty trick on her. Sofie and her grandmother react to events with differing viewpoints, but their companionship and respect deepens as they navigate the unexpected hurdles thrown their way. Just as charming and readable as the first book, this one, too, will leave you smiling and cheering Sofie's invincible spirit.

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

More About the Author

I was born in the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia back then) where we lived with my grandmother. She DID wear a wig and was the inspiration for the first WIG book. I was both intrigued and terrified of that wig when I was a kid.
My family immigrated to the States when I was 10 years old.

I was a high-school teacher and an avid reader until I became a full-time mom. Now all I do is change stinky diapers.

I am a mom to three very energetic young kids and a French Bulldog named Zoe. We live in the Chicago area.

I have a Bachelor's degree from the Univ. of Illinois (in Champaign) and a teaching certificate from Elmhurst College. I would have a Master's degree from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago had I finished that pesky thesis. My current/permanent status is ABT (all-but-thesis). I also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris for a year but that was a million years ago!
