Grab your crunchy, munchy honey cakes: it's time for a feature-length movie from Australia's fab four, the Wiggles! Released Down Under in 1997 as The Wiggles Movie, this charming show gives fans a wholesome, 70-minute fix from the singing group's pre-Disney Channel years. Today is Dorothy the Dinosaur's birthday, and the Wiggles can't wait to surprise her. Alas, sweet selfless Dorothy thinks they have forgotten. As the four tuneful Aussies bop from Henry's kaleidoscopic underwater pad to Wags the Dog's house and beyond, Dorothy keeps busy by teaching a struggling magician how to believe in himself. Throughout the story, 16 song-and-dance numbers easily mesh with the plot. Lightweight action swirls to a happy ending as magician Wally the Great lives up to his name and Dorothy's party restores her faith in friendship. While 3- to 8-year-olds should enjoy the whole show, wiggly toddlers might lose track. --Liane Thomas

From the Back Cover

The Wiggles are on a magic adventure in their first feature-length video! Their friend Dorothy is having a birthday--but she's not very happy. It appears that the Wiggles have forgotten her birthday! To make matters worse, magician Wally the Great has stolen Greg's magic wand. But when Dorothy takes off in hot pursuit of Wally, she teaches him some magical lessons along the way. Meanwhile, the Wiggles are planning a surprise birthday party for Dorothy. Watch what happens when Wally and Dorothy finally arrive at the Wiggle House! It's more than a birthday surprise--it's a celebration of friendship, wiggly music, and dancing from the Wiggles!

Songs: Hey There Wally, Dorothy (Would You Like to Dance?), Can You Point Your Finger and Do the Twist?, Rock-a-Bye Your Bear, Captain FEathersword Fell Asleep on His Pirate Ship, Rockin' and a Rollin' Sea, Boom Boom, Mrs. Bingles Theme, Tap Wags, Ballerina Ballerina, Ooh It's Captain Feathersword, Hot Potato (Young Wiggles), Romp Bomp a Stomp, I'm a Cow, Nya Nya Nya, Let's Have a Party.

Format:VHS Tape
My 22-month-old loves this movie ("WallyWallyWally," as she calls it--a reference to the theme song about the film's protagonist), and she will gladly sit through it several times straight through if I allow her to. Initially, I was surprised. She adores The Wiggles, and we own quite a few of their videos. Yet, at her age, her attention span is short, and she typically gets up and leaves the room after just a few songs, regardless of which tape she's watching.

So, when I sat down to watch this with her the first time and saw that it was a traditional movie, with dialogue and plot, I didn't expect much. But for some reason, it holds her interest, and she does her best to explain to me what's going on in the simple but pleasant story (regarding a sad-sack magician, Dorothy's disappearance on her birthday, and The Wiggles' efforts to find her in time for her surprise party).

After a few viewings, the film began to remind me more than a little of "Barney's Great Adventure," which my son became similarly addicted to five years ago. The two have a lot in common--similar plots and production, simple set dressings featuring bold colors, slapstick comedy, cheesey special effects, etc. But I would rather watch this film any day than that one, as I suspect most parents would.

The film isn't great, but it's not horrible, either. And over time, it's more likely to hold the kids' interest than the monotony of the song-collection videos from the group.

My Son's Favorite Movie August 6, 2004
Format:DVD
I originally bought this movie because it had my son's favorite Wiggle's song "Rock-a-Bye Your Bear" on it. At first, I thought it was going to be like the show and was a bit disappointed that it was a full-length movie--not broken up into small segments, etc. I thought, "What 1-year old is going to sit through a 70-minute movie?" Well, from the second I put it on, my son was transfixed with "Wally". Since we have bought it, Parker has memorized all the songs, dance moves, and dialogue. He loves it so much, we bought the CD soundtrack that has taken up permanant residence in the car. The songs are so catchy, my husband and I don't even mind that practically every waking moment is taken up by singing one song or another from this movie. A year and a half later, and we are still not tired of it. While the production values are horrid--the lip-synching in the last segment is kind of freaky, etc.--I don't think a little kid will really care. The message of the movie is a good one. Wally steals, then breaks, Greg's magic wand. The rest of the movie, Wally and Dorothy attempt to fix the wand and return it to Greg. When he has asked, "Mommy, what is Wally doing?" my son and I have had some good discussions about how it is not nice to take other people's things. The Wiggles manage to get their point across without being preachy. Overall, a good purchase for die-hard Wiggles fans.

Format:DVD
This first time I put this DVD in I was like this is horrible. My daughter didn't think much of it either. She's a year old and their are few things that hold her attention. I put this video in again and it was totally different to us. I don't know what happened, but it's great now. The editing isn't so great but it appears that these guys love what they do.

We watch this movie everyday. My daughter runs over to the TV when we get home and points to the Wiggles DVD.

I read several of the reviews that compared this with Barney. This is so not Barney! I realize that some of the jokes are lame and the acting isn't the best, but at least the main characters are not a big purple dinos.

Bottom line: You and your child will both enjoy this movie. The songs are catchy and you find yourself singing them everywhere.

The only part of the movie that scared my daughter was Wally the Magician. His hair is wild and sometimes he can have a mean look on his face. So when they do a close up it scares her. Hey, it would scare me too.

A Magical Surprise
My 3 year seemed to like the movie, because the songs were like a greatest hits from all the other short movies. It is a little slow, but the music helps it along.

Wiggly Good Time
My four-year-old quite enjoyed this... although it is a little different from the other Wiggles DVDs; there's less singing, but good way to teach him how to follow a story through.
