Story: Set in the 1880's, this is the tale of a homesteading family, the Tanners, that gives up their entire finances to moves from back east Pittsburgh to a promising homestead in rural Wyoming. The family purchased the farm site unseen from a cousin. The father, mother, and two sons who have lived as city folk, arrive to find a ramshackle farm that they must begin to repair and learn to farm, the first of many setbacks they face. A bitter and violent local rancher threatens to cut off their water supply to drive them out. Mr. Tanner tries to tech his boys they need to respect the law and property rights rahter than responding in kind. Along the way they must develop the skills they need to survive and grow into a closer family. It's a very touching story of courage and morals in the worst conditions.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Most filming was done on location in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Production designer Robert Clatworthy was responsible for turning the green crops of real alfalfa brown overnight for the drought scenes. He mixed a concoction of so many dyes and paints he cleaned out all the local paint stores. Special effects also required a realistic tornado, and so the director arrange for the propellers of 3 snow planes as well as 7 Hollywood wind machines in order to create the wind. The incredibly realistic dust cloud could be seen 30 miles away.

This movie was released to theaters on January 20, 1971. Directed by Robert Totten and filmed in glorious Technicolor. Calvin Clements Jr. had adapted the screenplay from the original book "Little Britches" by Ralph Moody. The terrific cast includes Steve Forrest as the father Jim. Vera Miles stars as the mother Kate, and appeared in 5 other Disney movies including "Those Calloways" and "Follow Me, Boys!". Ron Howard stars as their son Virgil, and had also appeared in "Smoke", and "A Boy Called Nuthin'" for Disney. His brother Clint Howard appeared as Andrew. Jack Elam stars as the mountain man. An interesting note, this is the first time that 3 members of the Howard family were in the same theatrical movie. Ron Howard would later return to Walt Disney Studios to direct the hit movie "Splash" under their then-new Touchstone label.
The movie's running time is 100 minutes long. The movie later aired on "The Wonderful World of Disney" anthology television show as a two part episode on February 23 and March 2 1975. It re-aired again in 1981. It was first released on VHS in 1986, and not again since as of this writing. It was released to DVD in 2010, but I do not know if it is re-mastered or in wide-screen.

A pioneer family face hard times and a deadly neighbor. Five very likeable characters and a good pace keep this film interesting. Filmed on location in scenic Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The two sons in the family are brothers in real-life too; Ron and Clint Howard. Similar to "Little House on the Prairie" and "Young Pioneers". Lots of action; yet pleasant.

In 1970, while Disney had been in their western movie phase with such classics as Scandalous John, Menace on the Mountain and many others. They released this classic film that takes place in the 1880s about the Tanner Family, who leaves the city life far behind, and invests their life savings in a ranch located in a very desolate area of Wyoming. Upon arrival, they encounter many unseen obstacles, in the path of making their dream a reality. Including an evil swindler, who will go to any lenghts including murder to force them to move out. Hostile squatters, and a wild frontier filled with harsh conditions and unexpected treachory. Undaunted, their magnificent courage and strengh draws the Tanner family closer to their goal, and also brings the family together in the process. The magnificent cast of this movie also includes. Steve Forrest, Jack Elam, Ronny Howard, Clint Howard, Vera Miles, Frank De Kova, Morgan Woodward and many others.

This is a truly great Disney western classic, that the whole family is sure to enjoy.

My son is reading Little Britches book for school, and I heard this is loosely based on that story. Although there are many things missing from the movie that are in the book, I still found this an action packed movie, and my son and husband loved it too. They don't show the true hardships the families went through without proper water and food supply, and the boys never even went to school in the movie, which is a big part of the Little Britches growing up experience, but none-the-less, a very good movie to watch with the kids.

A great film about family values. Father Son, Mother Son, Mother Father - all of these relationships are pulled apart and left open for the viewer to see. Even prejudice and selfishness characters are examined. Great movie to watch with the family - popcorn anyone?

This is a classic American movie which shows the power, faith, and strong belief in the family, God, and the rule of law under the constitution. Set in the 1880's, this film has adventure, tear jerking scenes, and the triumph of the American spirit. Fine acting through and through. Strongly recommend this movie to all ages. First saw the movie when I was 10 and I have never grown tired of this classic American family western.
