5.0 out of 5 stars Early Bruce. An artist coming into his zone February 16, 2013

My favorite Springsteen album. Maybe you had to grow up on the Jersey Shore (we call it the beach, by the way), but this record Sounds like the boardwalk in summer in the early 70s. I can listen to 4th of July Asbury Park, Sandy over and over. Takes me back even tho my Sandy was named Sue. Ah, youth.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Boss's best unknown album August 5, 2013
By R. Goss
Format:Audio CD
As some of the other reviewers have already pointed out, this album is a must-have for any serious Springsteen fan. The songwriting on this is absolutely amazing, and the E Street Band has never been tighter on any recording that I've ever heard.

"The Wild, The Willing and the E. Street Shuffle" was released in 1973, about midway between the release of his first album, the experimental yet somewhat uneven "Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ" and his first big hit album, "Born to Run," which came out in 1975. It was "Born to Run" that first introduced America and the world to the quality of Springsteen's songwriting and recordings. Yet, to my mind, "The Wild, The Willing and the E. Street Shuffle" is superior to both of these other albums, and perhaps to any album he and his band ever released.

In addition to the songwriting and playing, one thing that makes this recording stand out is its diversification. The album starts off with the funky track "The E Street Shuffle," which builds to a high-energy, bongo-laden crescendo that's as cool as any song ending from any group of the period. The 2nd track, "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)," is a sweet ballad that perfectly encapsulates the feelings of a working-class New Jersey boy full of teenage lust and angst. "Kitty's Back," the next track, is a cool jazzy number that showcases the talents of the band, particularly in the middle, and Track 4, "Wild Billy's Circus Story," is a fun and rather touching tale about carny life in a traveling circus.

The song that follows, "Incident on 57th Street," is my personal favorite on the album.

This album is different from a lot of Bruce's other work, but definitely displays the musical prowess of the E Street Band as well as Springsteen's songwriting capabilities. It's a must-have for any serious Springsteen fan.

I owned this album before & it was wrecked in a flood . so reaquiring it makes me happy. I have always believed the n.y. serenade is the bosses best song ever.
