"The bluest of blood, the boldest of hearts; the de Montforte brothers will take your breath away."

England, 1776: Lord Gareth de Montforte is known as an irresponsible rake with a heart of gold. When he takes a bullet for boldly thwarting a stagecoach robbery, he is stunned to discover that the beautiful young woman he has heroically rescued, Juliet Paige, is his deceased brother's American fiancée, accompanied by her infant daughter. Despite his brother the duke's refusal to acknowledge Juliet, Gareth is determined to do right by the courageous woman who crossed an ocean to give her baby her rightful name. But Juliet is wary of marrying this black sheep aristocrat, even while she is hopelessly charmed by the dashing devil. Never has she met anyone who embraces life so thoroughly, who makes her laugh, who loves her so well. And, even when it seems the odds are against them, Juliet has absolute faith that Gareth will go beyond the call of duty, risking his life itself to give her and her daughter a home -- and a love that will last a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!!!!! May 7, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book was a refreshing and welcome change from the romance novels that I've read lately. I couldn't put it down. The hero, Lord Gareth de Montforte, is everything that a hero should be and more: he's strong, he's sexy, he's charming, he's courageous, he loves kids, and he goes to heroic lengths to make a future for his wife and infant daughter, risking his life in the process and winning my heart as well! If you like fast-paced, sexy stories, unique characters, an unusual plot, and books set in England, you'll LOVE this book. I did!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely LOVED this book! (4 3/4 stars) May 27, 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I LOVED THIS STORY. I thought that Gareth was unbearably adorable..so he was a little immature at times, but he was only 23 and I for one, was thoroughly charmed by him. I adored watching him with Juliet and especially his interactions with little Charlotte. I thought that Juliet was his perfect match , though Ill admit that at first it worried me that she had been involved with his brother, but my fears were soon laid to rest as I watched their love grow. My only quibble with this book was that sometimes I felt like other aspects of the plot overshadowed the romance, but for the most part..I LOVED THIS.. A definite keeper..I cannot wait to move onto the next in the series!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very weak storyline July 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I absolutely hate giving negative reviews, but I would have appreciated reading some before I took the time to read this book. I honestly didn't think I could finish it, but plowed through it by skimming over a good deal in hopes that it would improve... It didn't.

First off was the quality of the writing. I was surprised to find this had actually been a print release, which ostensibly means an editor read it and line and copy editors proofed it. I was quite disappointed in the overall quality of the writing, not to mention the syntax, grammar, sentence structure and basic English errors. This nearly kept me from continuing to read.

The worst part of this book, however, is the horrific storyline. I wonder if Ms. Harmon researched her time period, customs, social dictates, etc. as from the beginning she had me rolling my eyes at her lack of knowledge of the social mores of those times, not to mention her total disregard for believability in a scene.

The "hero" was a barely likable character and I kept asking myself how the heroine could fall out of love with her deceased fiancé so quickly and embrace this goodhearted, though very immature boy with such complete abandon.

The bordello scenario was probably the worst offense in the book and I actually had to put my iPad down for the night. I decided to "soldier on" and read that after the bordello fiasco (on their wedding night, no less), the "hero" dumps his new wife and niece off at his family home, without a word of where he has gone, or what he was doing. Juliet was a stranger to a new land, with a baby to provide for, a newlywed to a man she really didn't know and he just leaves? When Gareth does mosey back, she welcomes him back with open arms? I think not. Had the writer taken time to develop their relationship, his maturity, etc., it would have been a little more believable, but she didn't and so I was left literally shaking my head.

Juliet was a slightly stronger character, but obviously didn't have a grip on social edicts and mores either and perhaps if she wouldn't have coddled Gareth so much, he may have stepped up a little sooner. Being supportive of someone you love is one thing, but coddling them when they are wrong, is another.

I could go on and on and on about the lack of believability in this story, but I won't.

I give her two stars for trying and for taking time and effort to put words to paper. I hope the author does more research regarding the time period she is writing about and improves upon what she started with this book.
