Book Description

November 15, 2011
Duke University coach Mike Krzyzewski has won more games than any Division I basketball coach in history. He is also recognized around the world as the coach of Team USA, and on campus at Duke, the man known as Coach K is such an icon that students bow down to him he walks onto the court named in his honor. But Krzyzewski's prolonged and unprecedented success is complicated. How is he still winning? Why he is coaching basketball? What happens when he decides to move on? Duke graduate Ben Cohen, who writes about sports for The Wall Street Journal, set out to answer those questions by revisiting his own time in North Carolina and interviewing Krzyzewski and those around him in exclusive settings. The result is an intimate portrait of Krzyzewski written from a unique perspective.

Amazon.com Review

Ben Cohen has written an insider's perspective on Coach Mike Krzyzewski, who has surpassed Bobby Knight as the winningest coach in college basketball history. At Duke and across the country, Coach K is recognized as a titan of basketball, and Cohen, a Duke graduate and former "Cameron crazy," does not shy away from this characterization. Using interviews with Krzyzewski’s wife, his daughter, coaches, former players, and even the man who first hired Coach K at Duke, Cohen paints a portrait of a man who grew up in ethnic Chicago, played and coached at Army (tellingly, under Bobby Knight), and eventually landed on the campus of one of the nation's most elite universities. Despite his unprecedented success and undeniable drive to win, Krzyzewski comes across as a thoughtful and layered man. About his experience bringing the gold back to Team USA, he had this to say: "The best thing is how much I've learned at a time in my career when, really, where do you learn?" This is a man who is always learning, always striving. --Chris Schluep

Mike Krzyzewski has been basketball coach at Duke University since 1980. At Duke, Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to four NCAA Championships, 11 Final Fours, 12 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season titles, and 13 ACC Tournament championships. Krzyzewski was also the coach of the United States men's national basketball team, whom he led to a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2010 FIBA World Championship. He was an assistant coach on the 1992 "Dream Team". From 1975 to 1980, Krzyzewski was the head basketball coach at the United States Military Academy, where he played from 1966 to 1969 under Bob Knight. On November 15, 2011, Krzyzewski led Duke to a 74-69 victory over Michigan State for his 903rd victory, surpassing the previous record of 902, held by his former coach, Bob Knight.

Before taking a look at this short biographical essay, that was all I knew about Coach K (as the New York talk radio hosts always call him), and it was only idle curiosity that led me to click on the One Click button. After reading the essay, I'm not sure I know much more, and I would be very surprised if any Duke basketball fan would learn anything new either. But, a few passages were interesting to me:

ESP analyst Jay Bilas: "Some people say that he's the same as he's always been, and I know they mean that as a compliment, but I don't see that. I think he's different. He's gotten better at everything, every year."

"I have heard a rumor that the last thing Krzyzewski does is rinse his hands in cold watter, making for a cool counterpart to a clammy hand [before shaking hands with an opposing coach before a game]."

"He derives the utmost pleasure from leading a player acros the bridge of finding out who he was and who he has to be, or who he will be."

He has four tenets of leadership: "The first three are empathy, passion and task orientation. The last, he said, was the most important. It was what he called 'situational flexibility', or , in other words, some'willingness to evolve."

Coach K has written two books,

Beyond Basketball: Coach K's Keywords for Success and

The Gold Standard: Building a World-Class Team and a number of DVDs including

Mike Krzyzewski: Duke Basketball: Breaking the Press (DVD) and

Mike Krzyzewski: All Access Duke Basketball Practice (2010-11) (DVD).

"He wrote his bestselling books with his daughter and edited with his wife (nixing words (intuit) and phrases (after all) he wouldn't use in conversation."

Cohen emphasizes that Krzyzewski is very protective of his private brand, very secretive and not open with others. After reading this essay I believe Cohen; he certainly didn't find any inner Krzyzewski.
