Book Description

The King’s castle stands alone atop Grand Ur Mountain, but even that does not match the solitude surrounding Princess Ali. With a carrot-shaped nose, she trudges through her princess duties with the most unfortunate face. With her pet greybar (a creature with the head of a greyhound, body of a polar bear, and wings of an eagle) as her only friend, Ali dreams of becoming a beautiful princess.

When Cory, a ninja-in-training, drops through the royal chimney, he does not intend to enlist the help of anyone, much less a girl, but she holds the key to the Creator’s map. The ancient map marks the secret hiding place of the magic Wishing Ring, a ring grants the wearer one wish.

Cory’s mysterious need for the ring and Ali’s dream of a beauty send the pair to a forgotten land. Only the war ravaged clan of Odana can translate the map’s key. But even if they manage to find a translator, the question remains—can they beat the Ogre who guards the ring?

5.0 out of 5 stars Reads like a classic fairy tale February 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Princess Ali has a nose like a carrot! It's the most unfortunate situation for a princess, who is supposed to learn to speak to her subjects on a regular basis. But how can she speak in front of a crowd when people always point and laugh?

When the princess meets a boy named Cory and learns of his search for the Wishing Ring, she knows she has found the answer. If she can help Cory find the Ring, she can wish for a regular-sized nose, and all of her worries will end. But many things stand in their way, including an ogre, who guards the ring.

What a cute story! I read it in one sitting. This is a middle grade fantasy story that reads like a classic fairy tale with adventure, friendship, a quest, and a happily-ever-after. Though the ending may surprise some young readers, it's well worth it. The only thing I couldn't quite picture was how eagles' wings would lift the body of a polar bear carrying two riders! But that's part of the charm of this story. It makes you smile. Recommended for readers eight and up.

*I received this book free from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Past the End of Her Nose March 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Princess Ally, Cory (a boy who gets stuck in her chimney), and Okoo, another boy they meet in a far north country, all have a wish. The Wishing Ring is a legendary object empowered by the Creator to grant each person who holds it one wish.
What does each young person wish for? Not necessarily what they started out wanting. Because this is a growing quest, growth in character and unselfishness. Even when what you want most might not be a bad thing, it's not always the best thing.
A fantasy with a princess also needs a few fantastical creatures, and this one has its share. It has an epic journey with plenty of chances to show courage and sacrifice. The villain perhaps isn't as well-developed as he might be. The scuffles between the competitive youngsters and the ogre and penguin attacks provide plenty of conflict. It might also have been a better story if the Creator were given a little more space and explanation.
Still, the story isn't really about villains or even the magical ring. It's about Ally finding out that this journey will change her mind about what she wants most. In the end, she'll learn that there's more past the end of her nose than just chimney soot, a foul ogre, a faithful friend, or a hidden mirror. Much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book from a talented author March 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Once again, Author Shellie Neumeier shares with us her gift for writing books. While Neumeier is diverse and talented in her ability to write everything from romance novels to teen and tween books, writing for the tween audience is, I believe, her greatest strength.

As a mother, the first thing I noticed was Neumeier's well-written dialogue. The characters speak just as everyday tweens speak, and thereby create something to which tween readers can identify. Ally, one of the the main characters in the story, shares thoughts that are typical of a girl her age, and her insecurities about her "carrot nose" are realistic.

This isn't only a book with strong characters and a delightful adventure, but it's also a story of hope and of discovering what's really important. In a time when it's often difficult to find books of any genre we feel comfortable with our children reading, I found "The Wishing Ring" to be a refreshing addition to our family library.

Both of my children have read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it! The first question they asked was "Mom, is there a sequel?" and "Mom, she's a really good author!" One of my children has started reading it again. Yes, it's THAT good!

If you can only purchase one Kindle download for your child's Kindle this year, I highly recommend this be the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting recreation of an ancient motive February 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Wishing Ring is a charming, well-written story about tween/teen anxieties and insecurities that lead three young adventurers to seek the Creator's wishing ring and solve their most pressing problems. As so often, the journey is the destination. While I often thought I knew what's going to happen, Shellie Neumeier kept surprising me, in a good way. Her fairy-fantasy world is populated by intriguing creatures that keep not only our heroes on their toes, but the reader too. Enjoy a fun read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read! February 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Finally, a book for tweens that deals with the subject of beauty in a positive way. Ali, who is not so perfect on the outside, has her inner strength tested as she goes on an adventure with her new friend, Cory. Both will discover hidden talents to deal with the dangers that await them. This is a book that's sure to be a fun read for both boys and girls.

More About the Author

Married for over 20 years, Shellie and her husband have four wonderful kiddos and two goofy greyhounds. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin--Madison, she went on to acquire an early childhood education certificate. Shellie also served in youth, children's, special needs and family ministries for over twenty-two years.

Now she enjoys teaching her teens how to drive and chauffeuring her preteens across the Wisconsin countryside. And once in a while, she loves to read big people books (you know the kind without pictures).

Shellie writes because it keeps her away from her husband's power tools and because every now and then, she doesn't have the choice, it just takes over. Her best inspiration comes from God and the occasional walk along a country road with her greyhounds.
