Book Description

One of the year's best lesbian fiction short stories, now available free!

The witch Meriel has spent her entire life in the lighthouse on tiny Bound Island. Upon the distant shore prowls an ancient sea god kept captive by a generations-old spell, a spell that Meriel alone must protect.

Meriel's life has been lonely and unchanging--until the arrival of Nor. Nor's shape is that of a woman, but her heart belongs to the sea. Even though Nor is also held captive by Meriel's spell, she shows kindness to the isolated witch. Nor sparks a passion within Meriel, defying every law that binds them both.

This award-winning short story ("The Witch Sea" won first place in the "Kissed by Venus" Fresh Voices short story competition, and will be included in the 2013 volume of Heiresses of Russ: The Year's Best Lesbian Speculative Fiction) is a dark fantasy tale of love, loss and the price of freedom, and a lesbian romance like you've not seen before.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Read June 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This story was not at all what I was expecting. I expected that it would be some short, typical erotic tale. It was nothing like that. It was so much more about love, pain, suffering, confusion, heartache... so much went into this tale that I found myself at a loss for words as I finished. The point was not about lesbians having a sexual encounter- it was about love in expected places. The one sexual scene was well-written innuendo, not graphic content. Beautifully written- I highly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative June 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I did not read the book, I savoured it. Incredible how Diemer's words evoked rich, detailed, energetic, painful, touching pictures in my mind and in my heart. I loved the interplay of personal destiny, family legacy and collective responsibility. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical March 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ms Diemer has written another of her brilliant and scintillating fairy tales. I'm buying anything this author produces because every one of them is worth reading. Her stories combine unusual and intricate plots with well-thought-out characters who develop and grow even in short stories.

The change and growth in Meriel as the story progresses is emotional and dramatic. But it's the unexpected ending that got me. Ms Deimer's writing reminds me of the best of Poe. Stories like "Masque of the Red Death" and "Silence a Fable" have the same imaginative lyrical and poetic qualities that Ms Diemer pours into her storytelling.

The evolution of Nor's over just a few pages, and the effect she has on Meriel is heart-warming to read, even if the ending is dark and unexpected. It's a passionate story and I recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting storyline
This had a decent concept. But I just wish the descriptions for 'encounters" were more vivid. It's short so why not give it a shot?
