It kept me on the edge of my seat right up until the very end.

Overall an excellent book, very well written as usual, but one best read in conjunction with The Believer.

I felt everyone, good and bad guys, had believable motives and acted accordingly.

This is not the fault of the author or any reflection on her - I just didn't like the story. In fact - I only read it about half way through.

This book, as well as The Believer, were hard to put down once I began reading them. Stephanie Black keeps you turning the pages. This book has a great plot and is a tremendous continuation of the first book. The author is very talented and has a wonderful imagination. You do have to read the first book, The Believer in order to understand what is going on in The Witnesses. Stephanie, keep the books coming! I look forward to future novels by this author!

I loved "The Believer", Stephanie Black's first book. In fact, I think I gave it five stars which I do very rarely. So I was thrilled to see this sequel published at last, and it didn't disappoint.

Set in the same carefully crafted and plausible dystopion world, The Witnesses takes up where The Believer ended, with the main characters in hiding and desperate to escape New America. The plot doesn't go in the direction you expect, and there are many surprises leading to the very satisfying and unexpected ending. The sense of menace doesn't let up, and the characters are complex but consistent and distinct. Alisa, in particular, is fascinating, and her development over the course of the two books is beautifully portrayed.

The only problem I found was that it was too long since I had read "The Believer" and with such a large cast of characters, many of whom are involved with or related to others, I was sometimes a little at a loss to place everyone and therefore to understand fully what was going on. This book is very definitely a sequel, and really wouldn't work as a stand-alone book. In fact, I recommend that you re-read the first book before you dive into this one in order to fully appreciate it.

The first half also dragged a little for me, mainly serving to build tension and re-establish characters. The ending was excellent, however, with plenty of action and satisfying surprises. I particularly liked the character of President Ryce.

Overall an excellent book, very well written as usual, but one best read in conjunction with The Believer.

I’ve been anxious to read The Witnesses, sequel to The Believer, for many years. It did not disappoint. The Believer was Stephanie’s first published novel, and I loved it so much it earned 5 stars and made it onto my coming-with-me-on-a-deserted-island bookshelf. Well, I’ll be adding The Witnesses to that shelf as well.

I was turning page after page, at times wondering how in the world Ian and Jill and Daniel would make it through, who would betray whom, who would live and who would die. I was in suspense to the very end, unsure of how things would turn out as the situation became more and more dire for our heroes. There was an unexpected and fascinating twist that I loved.

I am in awe (though not surprised) at how well-crafted and layered the story is throughout both books, and the way the twist worked into events near the end. While the book had a very satisfying conclusion, I still find myself wondering how things worked out in the long run. I need to sit down with Stephanie and either get her to tell me or convince her to write a follow up because I really want to know. I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to Ian.

I highly recommend both The Believer and The Witnesses. They made me think, kept me reading, and stayed with me for days. Well done, Stephanie. Now get going on that follow up for me. (Please?)

This is a great sequel to "The Believer". It is the continuing story of Ian, Jill, Daniel, and Alisa. They are still trying to make their way to The United States, but are having a lot of trouble getting there. Daniel's parents are still alive and on the run. Ian, Daniel, Alisa, and Jill are caught by the police and taken to President Ryce. There are interesting twists and turns in this book.
