Book Description

November 16, 2010
Power. We all want it, they've got it - witches, warlocks, sorcerers, necromancers, those who peer beneath the veil of mundane reality and put their hands on the levers that move the universe. They see the future in a sheet of glass, summon fantastic beasts, and transform lead into gold... or you into a frog. From Gandalf to Harry Potter to the Last Airbender, wizardry has never been more exciting and popular. Enter a world where anything is possible, where imagination becomes reality. Experience the thrill of power, the way of the wizard. Now acclaimed editor John Joseph Adams (The Living Dead) brings you thirty-two of the most spellbinding tales ever written, by some of today's most magical talents, including Neil Gaiman, Simon R. Green, and George R. R. Martin.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Anthologist extraordinaire Adams (Federations) once again strikes gold with 33 original and reprinted tales of wizardry in a wide variety of settings, from the medieval (Mike Resnick's "Winter Solstice") to the modern (Jeremiah Tolbert's "One-Click Banishment"). George R.R. Martin effortlessly creates a convincing mythic world in "In the Lost Lands," wherein a knight tries to discourage his lady's interest in shape-shifting. Resnick's contribution movingly depicts Merlin suffering dementia-like effects from living backwards in time. A peasant endures numerous trials at the hands of a wizard king in Susanna Clarke's humorous "John Uskglass and the Cambrian Charcoal Burner," while Wendy N. Wagner's "The Secret of Calling Rabbits" is a melancholy and deeply affecting account of the last days of the last dwarf. Adams just keeps getting better and this anthology is no exception. (Mar.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent fantasy anthology December 6, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love this book. I have read George Martin's "In the Lost Lands", Susanne Clarke, John R. Fultz and David Barr Kirtley stories so far. All are excellent. David Barr Kirtley's "Family Tree" feels more like an excerpt from a novel. The ending left me somewhat disappointed. Overall the book managed to completely avoid Harry Potter knockoffs and concentrated instead on sense of wonder, magic lands and fairy tale atmosphere, at least in the stories I read so far. Would have been nice to have Patrick Rothfuss, Michael Shea and James P. Blaylock in this one, but this is just IMHO.
Thanks for the great book!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing magic June 17, 2012

I loved the first story by George RR Martin, then the compilation went downhill. I wondered if the stories by my favourite authors (such as Ursula Le Guin) were early attempts, unpublished until now due to lack of maturity or underdeveloped skill? Some highlights, too many disappointments, compounded by typos (Kindle OCR errors maybe?).

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mix November 13, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Got this for one story by one author (I know, possible overkill, but the Johannes Cabal books are really that good.) Read the rest because they were fantastic - so many weird, delightful stories on the same theme! It's an excellent compilation.
