Haunting, mind-blowing,
This review is from: The Wolves of Kromer (DVD)
This is one of those rare movies that upon first view it enthralled and frightened me with it's subconsious familiarity. From Boy George's first words of narration to the strange interaction of a local women to these two "wolves" I was hooked. And while it could be seen as simpistic. When have fairy tales ever been complex? A case could be made that the acting is all over the place. Have you seen Star Wars II? The great "secret" of this movie seemed a bit obvious. But considering the current stuff in the paper seems sort of precient. Entertaining. Sensual. Evocative. Strange.

I first saw this film at a film festival a few years ago, and have looked forward to getting it on DVD since. It's a beautiful movie - the settings and scenes are lush and rich, and the characters are all wonderful - from sexy young men to ridiculous old ladies. It's a fairy-tale-esque story with wolves as an allegory to gay men, with a nicely intertwined story of some elderly ladies plotting to kill their mistress. It's not just worth watching, it's worth watching more than once!

A Howling Success,
By Aubrey Greene (London, UK) - See all my reviews The Wolves of Kromwer focuses on the relationship between Seth and Gabriel, two gay wolves, their supposed murder of the local lady of the manor and the resulting wolf hunt. Imaginative script with surreal comic touches. Well acted and good characterisation. Involving and thought provoking. Premiered at Sundance Film Festival. Charles Lambert (writer and producer) is a man I am expecting great things of in the future.

I love and will always this movie The Wolves of Kromer ~ Will Gould (III). The Wolves of Kromer is now the movie I like most of all in life. Don't buy this movie expecting your typical horror gore bloodfest because this movie does not even try to go there. This movie addresses gay social issues, homophobia all the attendant ignorance amd hate it spawns. Wolves and werewolves are more a recurring methaphor in the movie than fact. Yes the script and story line could have used some tightening up. Yes the pace was too slow and the people were a little bit too one demensional but none of that took away from the underlying power messages about how stupid homophobia is this movie sent on many levels. Yes there could have been more action and better character development and I would agree the movie had more than its share of flaws and bad production values but, I suggest the sheer power of its political message delivered using the Wolf \ Werewolf metaphor was artistic genius and more than makes up for any cinematic lapses in style and quality in other areas.
I usually hate movies that come to a tragic end but The Wolves of Kromer end's with a healthy degree of tragic irony that effectively drives the whole point of the movie home in a way worthy of the best hollywood has to offer. I watched this movie not expecting too much and ended up getting my eyes opened and my heart stolen. I can tell you now The Wolves of Kromer is a movie you can only understand completely if you have struggled with gay issues in your own life. The Wolves of Kromer makes perfect sense if you dealt with your own gay issues. I think The Wolves of Kromer is perhaps the only movie that has ever so effectively touched my heart. I know most people will not agree with me about the awesomeness of The Wolves of Kromer but honestly I do not care. I call them as I see them and move on! I am happy I brought this movie it is prized in my vast DVD collection.

What is the difference between odd and eccentric,
By Kurt Clare (South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Wolves of Kromer (DVD)
The theatrical version works, the movie does not.
The `Wolves of Kromer' is an adaption of Charles Lambert's play, and is meant to be a parable on both homophobia and gossip, with a strong dose of religious zeal. The main characters represent two archetypes, with Gabriel being headstrong, confident and sexually assured, and Seth being the exact opposite. In this fantasy they are both `wolves' (read gay) and as such are separate from society, existing on the fringes of Kromer a small rural town. The inhabitants tolerate the wolves, but never accept them and when the `normality' of the town is challenged in the form of a murder committed by two of their own, they react by targeting the `wolves'. Sound familiar? Homophobia also exists on the fringes in most societies, and manifests in many ways when sparked. Whilst the story is an accurate parody of such, it fails in many ways. The two main stories (murder committed by two old women and the story of the wolves themselves) are designed to ultimately intersect, they do so not by way of design but rather a forced, confusing mechanism of blame. It could have been done differently, and dare I say far more successfully. The `lessor' story of conflict in the town's priest, and his paradox was for me far more interesting. Yet the movie touches on this, almost as if it was only part of the consequence directed against the wolves. It is in fact, the main reason. The portrayal of the wolves in my opinion bordered on being spoon fed. Just in case I did not get the metaphor, a large prosthetic tail is provided for my visual education. I got the story quite quickly, and that tail did nothing more than cheapen the movie visually. It ended up being a significant annoyance, making me feel as if I was part of the ignorant masses in desperate need of visual affirmation, just in case I did not get the story. If you like art theatre, and treat such as seriously as you do your own art, you will not enjoy this movie. If you like young good-looking men, in a state of carnal inhibition and animalistic undress (but for that blasted tail) you may enjoy it a great deal. I for one expect a great deal more from cinema, and do not appreciate having good money wasted on gimmicks.

Likeable, But Scarcely Above "Made For TV" Quality,
This review is from: The Wolves of Kromer (DVD)
The gay werewolf couple are endearing. The two old lady maids who plot to kill their mistress and lust in advanced age over the local Vicar are terrifying. The teenage girl who lusts after one of the wolves is spunky and forthright. Her kid brother is curious, fearless and honest to a fault... This could have been a much more interesting movie !
This plays like a BBC 'made for TV' drama, but the BBC in considerably less than top form. The odd plot elements could have made for something highly unusual, but instead , you get British small town cliches.(Not so very different from American small town cliches ! The prejudiced townspeople, the repressed Vicar etc. etc.) The rural cinematography is gorgeous, but this in itself is a cliche of British small town drama.

Touching Story,
This review is from: The Wolves of Kromer (DVD)
A romantic tragic comedy is touching plenty of issues dealing with discrimination and daily routine of same attracted, present in a fairytale form by a handsome cast, with interesting visual solutions as subtitles supplement an original English accent.
It is better once to watch than reading a dozen of reviews, anyway.

Pretty guys semi-scantily clad. I know there's a point but no nudity, no sex, and bad dialogue/acting. Eye candy with a bit of emotional impact if you really stretch the isolation/others theme. Just good, silly fun

I loved this movie. It's a cleverly presented fairy tale about "wolves". It has love, sex, murder, betrayal...It even has evil old hags. James Layton and Lee Williams are easy on the eyes. I'm glad Mr. Layton has returned to acting and that Mr. Williams never left.
