5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful versions of classic books March 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Since the Oz books were published before 1926, they are all in the public domain. As a child, I read them in cheap 1960s reprint editions, and today they are available in many electronic versions of varying quality. Many versions are free.

But none that I have seen look as good as these lovingly-edited versions from the Eltanin folks. They have taken pains to get the formatting and illustrations right in all their rich colors and period details.

We today take it for granted that we can get most things in any colors we want. But the Victorian era when the Oz books were created was in fact the first time mass-market items like books and clothing came in such brighf colors thanks to the nineteenth-century invention of cheap synthetic dyes.

These ebook versions are well worth their modest price. Of course they are best suited to a color device.

5.0 out of 5 stars Illustrations were cute and all included. June 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story was complete, as were the illustrations. My daughter enjoyed the lion roaring illustration the best. Thrilled to find a simple to use Kindle version of this book that included the original illustrations. We can donate our real copy of this book now, confident in the accuracy of the Kindle version. Now we are off to get more of the Oz series. Good job Eltanin Publishing. Well worth the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eltanin ebook edition - great, with one flaw. November 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is not a review of The Wizard of Oz, which needs neither review nor introduction to any but the most eremitic of Americans. This is a review of the Eltanin Kindle edition.

Let me say at the outset, for just under a buck, this edition of the Wizard of Oz is a steal; run, don't walk, to the check-out page with this edition in hand (not forgetting to stop en route to pick up the other four Oz books Eltanin has made available to date). I really feel a pang of guilt paying so little.

I want to give this edition five stars as, in a way, I feel I'm being unfair to the publishers. Eltanin has done a masterful job in recreating the book in electronic edition, given the restrictions of the Kindle/Mobi format.

But the edition has one flaw I feel needs to be mentioned.

The positive: in comparing this e-edition with a hard-copy early edition, I found only a single illustration missing. With that sole exception EVERY illustration from the original print edition is included, which in itself makes this edition unique amongst e-Ozes, and quite uncommon even for print editions. In comparison with the only other illustrated digital edition of The Wizard of Oz I've been able to locate (a full digital scan of the book in PDF format over at the Internet Archive), the Eltanin scans come off quite well. Though of lower resolution than the IA version, they are crisp and clear, where the IA edition is often washed out to the point of losing important detail. Further, Eltanin managed to extract many illustrations even where in my hard-copy edition, they were overrun by text. That alone must have represented a lot of digital editing. Kudos to Eltanin.

The negative: I almost feel as if I'm nitpicking here, but in the Eltanin edition all images are presented in line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good presentation of a classic February 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
(This is a review of the Kindle reader version.)
This edition contains the original illustrations, which adds to the authenticity and charm of this version and added to the pleasure of reading it.
As an adult who enjoyed the "Wicked" book series, I am not sure I ever actually read this story as a child. Certainly I watched the film many times. Reading it now, i can appreciate the style, the writing, the charm, and the enchantment of the story.
i recommend this for children, for adults who want the background for "Wicked," and for parents and grandparents to read to children. It has an old-fashioned simple yet fantastic approach that i hope and expect will always appeal to children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic February 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
How could you not love this classic? This is a work of art that has a place in everyone's heart. I was thrilled to get this via e-book. The vibrant colors on HD are breathtaking. This is an all time favorite of mine and I will treasure my Kindle version of it. A hearty thank you to Eltanin Publishing and to Amazon for providing it as free e-book special. I only hope that others see it and are able to download it also.
