There isn't a whole lot one would expect to see when looking at a donkey, but such is not the case with this picture book. There is a lot of tongue-twisting, long-winded, catch-phrasing going on in this story. It all happens when a little yellow bird just happens to be sitting on an old fence post by the side of the road and sees a donkey hobbling along. The bird notices that the donkey has some very interesting things about him, he's missing a leg and an eye to name a few. The little yellow bird just keeps adding these interesting qualities and it's quite interesting to see if you have enough breath to say them all.
Water color illustrations bring donkey and bird to life. The readers in the age range of 5 to 9 yrs will get a close and personal view of the donkeys many attributes. Teachers and parents will enjoy this picture book as much as children. The quirky lyrics will make everyone giggle. Children will learn a new song that can be downloaded from the Scholastic website. This book is very interactive and helps children understand that we are all different and that's not a bad thing.

When I was in New Zealand my hostess gave me a hardcover version that included a CD with the song. It is a big hit there. I think it is good for humorous vocabulary. I bought a paperback version through Amazon to share with my grandsons.

I want to give this book one star for two major reasons:

1) Wonky is a ridiculous made up word only my wife uses and this book is ever present ammunition against a decade long argument about this word.

2) My kid loves this book. But I mean loves it. As in if I'm out of town on business I have to Skype in at night to sing it (see below) to him or else he won't go to sleep. Sometimes a book can be too good.

Kidding aside, #2 can be a real problem, so it's the reason for the legitimate 1 star deduction. That being said, the book is clever and easy to remember plus it teaches children more difficult words they normally wouldn't be exposed to on a daily basis. Plus, Scholastic allows you to download the accompanying song for free from their website, which is vital to the real Wonky Donkey experience. I don't think I've ever gotten more out of $7 in my life.

Amusing book about meeting a donkey.
"I was walking down the road and I saw...
a donkey
Hee Haw!
and he only had three legs!
He was a wonky donkey."
Repeat the above and add "and one eye! He was a winky wonky donkey."
In the end there are eight adjectives to describe the donkey.
It is a pretty funny book and my toddler loves it. I also enjoy reading it... several times in a row :-)
I have deducted a star because some of the illustrations are a bit off-putting, scary even! The page that I find most disturbing shows the donkey's face with one eye open and the other eye closed, and a bird with an eyeball in it's mouth!
I love this book, and I would recommend it to friends with a brief mention of my opinion of the illustrations. I'm not sure whether or not I would buy it as a gift, I think I would because the story is good enough to overcome a couple of scary pictures.

We were lucky enough to see author Craig Smith read the Wonky Donkey live, playing the guitar at the same time, and my story-reading skills pale in comparison. But my kids still love this book for its clever alliteration and great illustrations.

Some negative reviewers have said this book pokes fun at disabilities, but my children have an affectionate respect for The Wonky Donkey and I'm happy to see a book where the characters are not "picture perfect."

I think one star is too many for this book. The first two hilarious (sarcasm) characteristics of the "wonky" donkey are that he has three legs and one eye. I don't think it's appropriate to teach young folks to laugh at others with disabilities, and I don't find this book either entertaining or educational.

I bought this book because we needed a story about a donkey. It wasn't until I read it to my grandson that I thought some, especially those who are physically challenged, could see this story as making fun of someone with a physical handicap. Maybe I'm too sensitive but if I had known the text of the story, I would have at least thought twice about making this purchase. My grandson, however, thoroughly enjoyed the book and its illustrations -- especially of the donkey! I apologized to my daughter-in-law about the story and she indicated it was fine. She didn't find the story offensive.
