Book Description

A contemporary of Jesus, Paul and Josephus.

Philo 20 B.C. – 50 A.D. is also known as Philo of Alexandria (gr. Φίλων ὁ Ἀλεξανδρεύς), Philo Judaeus, Philo Judaeus of Alexandria, Yedidia and Philo the Jew, was a Hellenistic Jewish Biblical philosopher born in Alexandria.
Philo used allegory to fuse and harmonize Greek philosophy and Judaism. His method followed the practices of both Jewish exegesis and Stoic philosophy. His work was not widely accepted. "The sophists of literalness," as he calls them, "opened their eyes superciliously" when he explained to them the marvels of his exegesis. Philo's works were enthusiastically received by the Early Christians, some of whom saw in him a cryptic Christian. His concept of the Logos as God's creative principle apparently influenced early Christology. To him Logos was God's "blueprint for the world", a governing plan.
The few biographical details concerning Philo are found in his own works, especially in Legatio ad Gaium ("embassy to Gaius"), and in Josephus. The only event in his life that can be determined chronologically is his participation in the embassy which the Alexandrian Jews sent to the emperor Caligula at Rome as the result of civil strife between the Alexandrian Jewish and Hellenized communities. This occurred in the year 40 AD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Digital is Good for Referencing October 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have the book form of this work that I bought some years ago from a book store. I sometimes found myself typing it out to use as a reference and that is really difficult for me. This format avoids all that, and I can bookmark places I am especially interested in and can go back to them later. This does not have an index but I can use the one in my print book, then highlight the parts I am able to find in that way, and so build my own sort of index in the Kindle book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good investment. March 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have to say that this is the FIRST compilation work I have found on Amazon that was formatted correctly for the most part, the only thing that could have been better would be to embed the footnotes into the page itself.

The navigation is perfect, it is easy to find what you want with the five-way controller.

I think this is the ONLY compilation book I have purchased that I am actually happy with, some of the other had better material.. BUT.. they were hard to manuever around in, defeating the whole purpose.

the thing about the formatting in this case is this..he just continually used "heading 1", making it at least easy to get from one section to another, by using "heading 2" he could have made some things look better in his table of contents but this is about the best I have seen personally, and I have compiled a couple books myself using Jutoh so I should know and understand what I am telling you, kudos on the good job, best I have seen ona compilation so far (electronically at least).

4.0 out of 5 stars The Works of Philo, Judaeus of Alexandria January 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another tome (I think over 800 pages). This one is definitely 'period' writing. It took me some time to adjust to the language presentation. In fact, I put it down after the first 50 pages, and several pages after that, thinking 'when is he going to say something I can understand?' But be patient (and that's going to be a chore if you're like me). The information is stuff you'll probably be fascinated with....stuff you won't often hear from the pulpit or the Sunday bible class. But you wlll come away from it with an acquaintance of first hand knowledge of a writer close to the action.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Deal! June 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very good deal and a lot of text to sort through. This would probably be easier to read through in actual book form though just because of the size of this collection.
