Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The World Almanac for Kids, 2013 is a vast resource of fast facts that the fourth- through sixth-grade crowd will devour. Jumping from subject to subject in alphabetical order, the book covers not only facts that happened in the year before but also information on topics such as the water cycle, how to say common phrases in different languages, and a history of fashion. Time lines, pictures, graphs, and other visual aids make the information bright and accessible for children, who will most likely sit in the library flipping through the pages and reading aloud to each other. Parents won’t mind stealing the book to sneak a peek and learn a few things, too, which could spark a dinner-table conversation or an educational car ride home. A good pick for school and public libraries, although kids will probably want to take it home and devour it. Grades 4-6. --Erin Linsenmeyer --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This easy-breezy compendium of trivia and useful facts about the world has totally intrigued my young teens and preteens. Whether you need to know the population of Senegal, a brief history of ancient Asia, Justin Beiber's birthday, or all the NASCAR champions since 1985, this book will fill you in. Every page is loaded with pictures in a magazine-style format, drawing kids in quickly and enticing them to turn the pages to learn more, and more, and more. I'm thinking about purchasing more copies as Christmas gifts -- judging by my kids' interest, they'd be a hit with some of my nieces and nephews.

My five-year-old is at a point in his life where he is craving to learn. During the Olympics, I showed him my World Almanac so we could look at the flags. He also enjoyed looking at the maps and presidents. So, for Christmas, I bought him this book. It gives kids more than enough facts and contains plenty of colored pictures to keep them interested. His book is fairly beat up already from the use. Now that he is in kindergarten, he now has a reference guide if he wants to learn more. For example, they learned about the planets and when he came home that day, he looked them up in the almanac to reinforce what he learned, as well as learn a little more. Now, even I know that Jupiter has 67 moons! This is a great supplemental tool, totally worth the price.

As a school librarian, I do an activity every year with my students using the World Almanac for Kids. The third through fifth grade students love it! I purchased one of these for my niece and for my grandson for Christmas. These books offer hours of fascinating information while teaching basic research skills. This is a great book for those who are not fond of reading, as the information is too fascinating for them to resist. It also presents information in a variety of formats including paragraphs, lists, charts and tables which also sharpens skills. Great for all ages.

My son loves to read facts and information -- anything from a singer, movie/TV star, to a sports athlete, to the tallest building in the world. If you have a child like this, they will love this book. I found the book extremely interesting for me! It has colorful pages full of facts and information. Highly recommend.

Title: The World Almanac for Kids 2013
Editor: Sarah Janssen
Publisher: World Almanac
ISBN: 978-1600571671

Are you a bored kid that wants to quickly learn something unique, different or obscure? Do you want to impress your family, friends, teachers and Facebook connections by giving simple yet amazing true facts? Here is your answer: "The World Almanac for Kids 2013," edited by Sarah Janssen.

This cute, compact, colorful and creative book has three hundred and fifty-two pages in its nine by six inch paperback book. From short chapters consisting to two pages about crimes, games or inventions to longer chapters of almost fifty pages regarding the United States, the material is in short, quick-to-read, interesting format. With an extensive eleven page index and three pages of photograph credits, topics are covered from birthdays and books to military and money to science and space plus so much more.

Each chapter has a colored tab on the top right side of its dedicated pages with bright background colors that encapsulate photographs, then-and-now charts, celebrity, movies and sports star crossword puzzles, color-coded lists or random trivial information. Eye catching maps, state and city information, easy to understand time lines, and clear, clean photographs are spread on every page, using every inch to enlighten and fascinate the mind.

What can we learn in just a few minutes? Pick the short chapter on disasters. Did you know one in five hundred earthquakes cause damage? Did you know tsunamis waves move at speeds of up to five hundred miles an hour? Did you know volcano lava may be hotter than two thousand degrees or that hurricanes can be up to three hundred miles wide?
