Editorial Reviews

Review

"THE NEW WORLD READER is very appealing to college students because of the wide range of relevant, concise, and readable essays by influential contemporary voices. The variety of questions for discussion and writing build rhetorical strategies and challenge students to think critically about the rapidly changing world in which they are coming of age."

"This is an anthology which pushes students not only to think about their identities as Americans, but also as global citizens - and to encourage us not to fall into isolationism or self-absorption as a nation. It does this by exposing and discussing the positive and negative aspects of our (inter)national identity, without either demonizing or sugar-coating America."

About the Author

Gilbert H. Muller is a Professor Emeritus of English at LaGuardia Community College and the author of several college textbooks as well as scholarly books on William Cullen Bryant and Flannery O'Connor.

I order the book a few weeks earlies, however, my class did not start until April 15, 2014. When opened the book the binder was broken causing the book to come apart. I kept the book because my class had started, but i is in very poor condition

First of all, it is a collection of articles and essays from people around the world with a taste for great thinking, mainly journalists whose work have been published in quality papers and books. They are essays from a variety of perspectives and backgrounds which reflect a truly global view of great themes and subjects that invite us into reflection. This is not a place for trivia or triviality.

After many years pondering on an unfinished business I decided to come back to college and have noticed that textbooks tend to be just that, textbooks, or, better to say, cows that produce enriched milk for its producers, but as a book lover, I don't want to keep them around, because they are expensive, shallow or meaningless. They exist because of the unintended effect of the federal generous hand in education, which awakes the appetite for overcharging the government into the realm of the prohibitively expensive. If they were sold as regular books I am sure they would promptly disappear into obscurity, or they would have never existed all along.

This book is different. I rented it assuming that I will not like to keep it, but I was wrong. Granted, it is still expensive, but not as much as other textbooks. I will look for a used one to give it a home in my bookshelf.

College or not, it is a mandatory contemporary reading in the tradition of great journalism, with its points and counterpoints for a balanced perspective of today's gripping issues.

Alas. Why is it not in electronic form and less expensive? Hence, the four starts. Other wise, content wise, a full five.

I'm glad I was able to buy this book on amazon instead of directly from my school. Saved me a lot of money! By the way, English class is really boring and I hate it...so yeah.
