5.0 out of 5 stars A Nutrition/Cookbook Double Whammy May 1, 2007
Format:Paperback
This is a truly incredible book. It is filled with TONS of nutrition information about the healthiest foods and the healthiest methods for cooking each of them. It also includes a quick-and-easy recipe for each specific food (e.g., tomatoes, cabbage, bananas), as well as a number of variations on that recipe. The recipes I have tried have all been incredibly tasty, figure-friendly, and easy to prepare. This book is large and packed with more information than you will ever be able to absorb. If you could only purchase one cookbook, this is the one I would recommend (and I own hundreds!). 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cooking Adventures October 11, 2006
Format:Paperback
George Mateljan presents the world's healthiest foods and includes over 500 delicious recipes to ensure that our diets include foods that have the "greatest number of health-promoting nutrients." He gives detailed information on 100 foods that are not only flavorful; they are the foods you need to enjoy a vibrantly healthy lifestyle.

What you will notice when using the recipes or including the foods recommended for your diet, is an increase in positive energy, creativity and a feeling of being happy to be alive. After only three or four days you can start to experience renewed vitality and visible changes in energy levels and overall health. Some of the highlights include:

What are the Word's 100 Healthiest Foods?

The Healthiest Way of Eating Plan - complete week-to-week plan with page numbers for the recipes to make each day.

Through this book you learn to cook with herbs and spices, incorporate whole grains into breads and eat a healthy balance of protein and carbohydrates. The foods are organized according to nutrient-rich qualities. A shopping list at the end of the book makes this user-friendly and encourages you to remember to buy the healthiest foods each and every time you go shopping.

If you have an interest in Sea vegetables (like toasted Nori you can also use for sushi) for their anti-inflammatory properties, they are easy to buy in sheets and I found you can add some to even the simplest of chicken soups to create a more healthy meal. A recipe for Hijiki Cucumber Salad makes use of Hijiki and you can add in tamari and ginger. Many of the recipes include intriguing variations.

Imagine dipping fresh breads into a garlic dip made with fresh garlic, lemon juice and garbanzo beans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for everyone October 29, 2006
Format:Paperback
I came across the web site for this book during my quest to find a diet for people with fibromyalgia (which I have). I found the web site to be the most imformative and best of it's kind. Thus, I assumed the book would be the same. IT WAS AND IS WONDERFUL. This is not a book you read from cover-to-cover. It's one that you pick up, open, and read - one item at a time - to expand your knowledge a specific item. For each item you find all the nutritional information you could ever want, plus a recipe (or two or three) using that item. This book is so GOOD that I recommended it to my reflexologist/aromatherapist and both of my massage therapists. The value you receive is amazing as well. Buy this book and change your life!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Content! Horribly confusing layout January 18, 2012
By carfree
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
5 stars for the information, 1 star for the organization (-5 stars for the Kindle version with no index option)

I bought the Kindle version after my hardcopy because I will be traveling and I am not able to carry a 4 pound, 877 page book. I had a hard time finding what I was looking for in the hardcopy because the foods are categorized by best nutritious foods first in each food group, not in alphabetic order. I would give this book 5 stars easily if I could just pick it up and thumb through an alphabetic list of the foods instead of going to the table of contents to find the page for the food group "Fish" page 453 to find the next table of contents with "Cod" on 484.

The Kindle version is even more difficult if not impossible to find what you are looking for. There is no "index" feature on the goto button and the first table of contents links to the first page of each food group which only has a graphic saying what page the foods are on and no link to them so you have to flip up to 300 pages in the vegetable section to get to Corn. plus there is no way to go to page 453 on the kindle because it is organized by location.

I would wait to buy the kindle version until after they make an easier way to find the content, the paperback is a great source of information and will be even better if the next version came out with and alphabetic layout.

4.0 out of 5 stars bought the book to support the website October 21, 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
whfoods is a great website with lots of good information and good recipes. I essentially bought this book to support that effort. The book itself could be 1/4 as large as it is, easily. Every single section of every single chapter includes the same information - very repetitive. That said, there is good information here, and the recipes are usually pretty tasty and are designed with health in mind ( thought I have to admit that I still saute in oil, and roast things until they are caramelized. I'm not a big fan of poaching or pan steaming). Be warned, though, that this is primarily a nutrition primer - the number of actual recipes in here is fairly slim when compared to the massive pagecount. Nutritional breakdown would have been nice, too - the actual food being discussed in each section has a breakdown, but the recipes do not. Most of us are not going to be eating plain steamed greenbeans, so that info is unhelpful by itself. Still, it's well priced for the level of information contained within.
