Book Description

May 1, 2012
In the Arkansas Ozarks, old-timers spin tales of the Wowzer, a giant panther-like creature that decapitates those who wander too far into the woods. County sheriff’s deputy Jerry was raised on Wowzer stories, but they aren’t enough to stop him from carrying out his own business in the remote hills. Jerry’s more than a sheriff’s deputy; he moonlights as muscle for local drug traffickers, who sometimes need people to get hurt—or get dead. Fortunately, Jerry’s pretty good at his job. And since Tom Haskell runs the sheriff’s office and the drug-protection racket, Jerry doesn’t see much of a moral dilemma. That is, until he starts thinking about getting out of the trade, and then things get complicated fast. For starters, Jerry’s girl Maggie flees the state after learning about a disturbing diagnosis tucked inside Jerry’s psych report. And now Sheriff Haskell is dragging his feet paying Jerry his cut of the drug money. Is Haskell just reluctant to lose his top muscle? Or is he plotting to take out the man who knows his dirtiest secrets? Fans of hardboiled, “country noir” fiction will love gnashing on Frank Wheeler’s violent and darkly comic debut, sneaking a glimpse into the mind of a killer whose inner monster is about to be unleashed.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Frank Wheeler is a bright new talent in the farmhouse, and The Wowzer kicks in the kitchen window. I can't wait to see what he cooks up next."--Sean Doolittle, author of Safer

The Wowzer is killer blues guitar meets Jim Thompson in the drug-haunts of the Deep South. Think John Lee Hooker in concert, with Sonny Boy Williamson screaming on harmonica. Have your pistol handy as you read, it’s that badass. Frank Wheeler is ‘Bad Like Jesse James’ and The Wowzer is pure Arkansas white-lightning.”--Scott Wolven, author of the critically acclaimed Controlled Burn

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a surprising book. It is narrated in Southern hillbilly, syntax-free, semi-neanderthal brute-speak by a pyschotic deputy sheriff. This guardian of law and order is deeply involved in the Arkansa drug business as an enforcer and kills casually and often between calculated beatings and maimings. He is haunted by violence in his past, indifferent to the violence in his present and fatalistic about that which will always mark his future. The mysterious legendary Wozwer is the fantasy monster roaming the Ozarks that symbolizes all Jerry's gruesome dysfunction.

It is all bizarre and the first-person verbal lurches are initially offputting. Somehow it works. It pulls the reader in to the mind of this brute and exploits his knowing what is going on and what he intends to do to keep the reader involved and make a true mystery of a relatively simple story of mayhem in the boonies. The author uses secondary characters effectively, especially the sympathetic but not exactly stable doctor girlfriend and Jerry's police chief boss who manages the drug franchise and controls Jerry's money. It's all grisly, vicious, venal and psychotic.

The main limitations are lack of variety in phrasing and pace. Since everything is articulated by good old Jerry, there is little room for shifting style, adding observations or providing a contrasting texture and mood within the narrative. In addition, the plot is kept obscure to add mystery but is stretched out a lot. The Wowzer theme is contrived and not really needed.

But, this is something different and vibrant. I think it is well worth your consideration if you enjoy any of the noir traditions -- film noir, crime noir, and other over the top weird and offbeat genres.

3.0 out of 5 stars okay June 29, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The characters are interesting, if not always likable. The writing is okay, except some of the lingo seems a bit far-fetched to me. The story moves along quickly. However, there just wasn't any spark that made me like the book all that well. It isn't a "bad" book, just not one that stood out in any way to me. So I give it a middle of the road rating of 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Wowzer got me, too! April 10, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
First, here's the bad news for science fiction fans who think THE WOWZER will chronicle an exciting confrontation with a terrifying version of Arkansas's answer to Big Foot: The "creature" of the title and book description is just a metaphor for the demon that lurks within the narrator of THE WOWZER, and probably somewhere within us all. So, here's the good news: You are still going to have your monster, and, an intriguing literary experience as well.

With his first novel, Frank Wheeler has delivered a page-turning adventure that is both thriller and psycho-profile, a modern book that recalls the work of Jim Thompson from the 1950s with first-person classics like The Killer Inside Me and A Hell of a Woman or a countrified version of American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.

Wheeler has accepted two daunting literary challenges and conquered them both. He elected to use his sociopathic main character as a narrator speaking in Arkansas country-boy colloquialisms to tell what could be a potentially hackneyed and well-worn story about a gangster fighting to retire from his gang. In this case, the gangster is a member of some hillbilly mafia who has masqueraded as a deputy sheriff and needs the help of his mentor to retrieve the passcode for the Swiss bank account that holds his 401K of drug trafficking gains. All he has to do is assist the mentor through one last war for control of the gang.

The result is an action-packed ride aboard the frontal lobe of a psycho who dispatches opponents without the slightest twinge of guilt, often in a grisly fashion that likely makes THE WOWZER unsuitable for some more squeamish readers. My fave: the beheading of one adversary with a shovel. Wheeler succeeds in allowing his narrator to describe these shocking scenes with a tone of detachment that actually complements the detailed action through the shocking contrast between narration and the events. What emerges is an entertaining novel you'll find hard to put down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different
I do like the setting, story and the use of dialect in this novel. However, I felt at times the dialect was a bit overdone and took away from the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars it's okay
i felt like it moved pretty well, but i'm not a fan of stories from the police perspective where they bully people and get away with it and all that.
