Product Description

The truth is out there. And this game, based on one of the best sci-fi TV series in history, is way, way "out there." Despite performances by original cast members David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi, and a few other favorites, The X-Files puts the "normal" back into paranormal.

Collaboration with the TV show's creator, Chris Carter, ensures that the game attains the eerie visual quality of the show, but the lack of any tension or pacing makes one wonder why the game is spread across an unusually voluminous four PlayStation discs.

Mulder and Scully have gone missing, and as the poorly acted Craig Willmore, a local FBI agent, you must find the clues that lead to their whereabouts. Most of the game is spent aimlessly wandering from location to location, hoping to find screen hotspots that may possibly give players a clue as to what they are supposed to do next.

Conversations with others seem strangely stilted, and often the script offers up red herrings that will frustrate players who try to play the game as if it were logically designed. In a number of instances, even though you know what course of action you should take, you're forced to wait for the game to catch up with you before taking it. Unless you are a die-hard X-Files collector, there is little reason to own this game. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Lots of well-produced video

Cons:

  • No sense of pacing
  • Limited interaction
  • Poor documentation
  • Illogical design
  • Scully and Mulder's appearances no more than cameos

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game, good graphics, almost too simple. November 17, 1999

Excellent game with excellent graphics. It is all filmed material, so it feels like you are actually out investigating with mulder & scully. Although, these excellent graphics didn't leave much room for developing a challenging game. I bought it on a Friday and by Sunday I was on disk four, which is why I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5. It would have been a bit better if you actually got to play as either Mulder or Scully too.

I absolutely LOVED this game, quite possibly the best I've ever played. The graphics were awesome, and I loved that you actually participated in it. I suggest that any gamer or X-Files fan play this game, because not only is it intellegently designed, but it is incredibly fun. Have fan gaming!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystery...Comedy...the choice is yours! January 28, 2000
By A Customer
Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I like this game a lot. While it was slow moving, I felt the pace was a plot device to throw you off guard when things got dangerous. In that way it worked well. I had no problem with Mulder and Scully's small role because I think the purpose is to let the player decide what kind of agent they personally want to be rather than imitate known personalities. It put more pressure and responsibility on you. We know the stars of the show won't get killed, but you just might that's part of the fun! Another juicy element to this game is the fact that you have to make chioces on questions and actions; it's fun to misbehave! Just put the handcuffs on Skinner and see what happens! Ask the same questions over and over again and see how the characters get annoyed! Agent Craig Willmore can be such a jerk if you know what choices to make. You can play the game as a mystery or a comedy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun June 15, 2000

I wasn't expecting much of this game after reading some reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised when I played it. You play the game as agent Willmore, and your assignment is to help find Mulder & Scully who dissapeared without a trace after checking into a hotel in Everett, WA. You must interact with different characters in the game and find clues from several different locations. With the artificial intelligence on the game isn't terribly difficult, but still challenging. Thank [goodness] for the save feature or else I would never finish, there are some tricky situations, without a walkthrough I might not have been able to figure out. There are cameos by central X-files figures including CSM, Skinner, the lone Gunmen, etc. I would play it again simply to focus on some of the details again, there is a lot to take in.

3.0 out of 5 stars GREAT GAME! ONE PROBLEM May 28, 2000

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
The X-Files Game is a great adventure/mystery game. I could'nt stop playing once I started. Great story, cool missions. ONE PROBLEM I beat it in one day! And it has NO REPLAY VALUE! Once you beat it once then thats it! It's no fun to play again because you know whats going to happen. I suggest you rent it instead of buying it, because it only takes about 8hrs to beat. But still, it's deffinately worth checking out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting for true X-Files fans September 20, 2000
If you're a true X-Files fan then you will probably enjoy this game, die-hard adventure and RPG gamers need not bother with it as they will find it too linear and simple. I got about half-way through the game (which is on 4 CD's) before I ran into a section that had me stumped (I'm an X-Files fan but not too good at adventure-type games!) I managed to track down a walk-through for the game which helped me out, and it also mentioned lots of silly things you can do in the game that result in interesing outcomes.
Once you've completed the game you probably won't play again, unless you're looking for easter eggs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice November 17, 1999

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I'm a big strategy game fan, and I think that this game is really worth a second look, even if you're not an X-Phile. (Which I am) Good game, good plot, good characters, all around five star entertainment. Don't let little kids play it though. You handle a semi-automatic pistol, and somwhow that doesn't seem like a good thing to impress on childrens' minds now adays.

5.0 out of 5 stars The X-Files game for Sony is very realistic and creative. November 13, 1999

The X-Files game for Sony Playstation is the most realistic and immensely creative game I have ever played. Everything about this game is very real. It seems as though you are actually in the television show (which is terrific for real X-Philes!). I give it the most stars it can recieve, which in this case is 5 *'s!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun
Its a fun game but there is one drawback. The end is anti-climatic. Thats the only thing. I think you should get more of a reward once you beat the game.
