5.0 out of 5 stars X-cellent X-men ColleXion May 13, 2009
Format:Hardcover
I am partial--I love the Omnibus series. Large hardcover books that look nice on a bookshelf (don't have to hide comics in large comic book boxes like a kid). This one has spectacular cover art, includes the original X-men 1-31 as well as the editorials from the Masterworks editions AND the letters to the editors and bullpen notes from the originals. Face it, most people will never get to own X-Men #1. The stories are corny, but they are also classic. Great little glimpses into the early years of the X-men. I love it. Looks great on a shelf. Sewn binding is very sturdy. Pages are thick, glossy paper. Looks great, well-crafted. Let's just hope Marvel continues the series and doesn't leave us hanging like they did with the Masterworks editions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but 2nd tier title... January 14, 2010
Format:Hardcover
The Omnibus series is great, reprinting the full comics. I read the whole series as a kid as we had all the comics (I have X-Men #1 framed on the wall, still a really cool cover), and was a big fan of the original X-Men, (liked them much better then the new X-Men). BUT, when reading them now, they just do not hold up as well as FF, Spidey, Daredevil, Iron Man, Hulk etc... Kind of like how some cartoons you loved as a kid are still good, but others you look at and wonder why you liked them...

The original X-Men was always a 2nd tier comic for Marvel. That's why they got very little of the top tier villans, and heck, ended up going into repeats before the big 'reboot' that brought us Wolverine and all (and made X-Men far more popular). They are just not as good as the other silver age Marvel comics.

If you know what you are getting, the Omnibus is great. But if you are a new X-Men fan, new comics or movies, or maybe read some of the other silver age Omnibuses and are getting this because you could never afford the real comics before, you might be dissapointed. These stories just do not hold up over time as well as others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holds up because of visionary Stan Lee writing August 4, 2009
Format:Hardcover
These were better than I expected, they held up great- and Stan Lee is such a great writer. Highly recommended, the introduction of the Juggernaut, wow! I love the fear he creates for the villains at times, where you really sense the danger the x men are facing. As always, Stan brings so much to these and that's why they stand the test of time!

I do detect a slight ungluing of the binding on the top of the book, but hopefully it won't continue. As long as the bindings are sturdy on these omnibus editions they are truly the most amazing way to experience the comics you knew and loved.

Give us full runs, Marvel! Still waiting for Thor, Doctor Strange, Uncanny X men vol 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars X-MEN Omnibus Vol.1 was fantastic September 4, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read nearly all of it, and I am completely satisfied with my purchase. There were some CLASSIC stories in the book; as well as some stories that I was unfamiliar with. And, the stories that I had never known about are just as spectacular as the ones I was familiar with.

When I bought it I was a little hesitant just because it is so much for a book. But a guarantee the book is worth every penny; besides Amazon gives a great discount from the original $99.99

I am patiently waiting Vol.2

5.0 out of 5 stars Meet the Children of the Atom!! June 5, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Stan (The Man) Lee and Jack (King) Kirby create a fantastic set of stories that begin our love affair with the "children of the atom" and set the stage for some of the greatest stories in all of comicdom.
Here we see Jack at his best (isn't he always) with some very memorable images especially as we are introduced to Juggernaut and the Banshee (my two favs). I would be remiss if I did not mention smilin' Stan and his wicked imagination which have provided the backdrop of my playtime imagination since I was about five years old. Now playtime with my little boys still is littered with stories born from Stans perilous pen.

Anyway I will end with this thought. If you love the Marvel age (silver age of comics) and enjoy the stories of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby then I would suggest this collection. Just click the "Add to Cart" and then go see X-Men: First Class (In Theaters Now) while you wait for it to arrive. You will not be disappointed with book or the movie.

Excelsior!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars You gotta make way for the Homo superior. November 17, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This huge book reprints the first 31 issues of The X-Men in a hardcover book with high quality paper. This isn't the X-Men with Wolverine; this is the original quintet of mutant teens. It was a solid concept right from the start, although Stan Lee didn't bother to give them distinctive personalities until issue #3. There's the brooding Cyclops, the intellectual Beast, the ladies man Angel, the jokester Iceman and the demure Marvel Girl. All the guys had a crush on Marvel Girl in the beginning, including Professor X, which was kinda creepy. Eventually, Cyclops won her heart, although it took a REALLY long time for their romance to get going. In fact, they still hadn't kissed after 31 issues. This book is expensive, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying the original comic books. They even included the original letter pages!
