I am happy with this story because my kids are so interested. The illustrations capture both my 2 year old's and 4 year old's imagination. Great Xmas story and a good conversation piece for my 4 year old. It's one of those books that opens your mind to other worlds and cultures different from ours; also opens your mind to history, seasons, and time. It's great.

Bought this as a "pre-Christmas" gift for my granddaughter. She and I both LOVE it! Such a sweet, loving, tender story about a little girl and her family at Christmastime!! Beautiful illustrations also! So glad I discovered this very special complex yet simple story. You won't be disappointed with this very touching story!!!

This story has been a traditionally read story in my family since I was a very young child. 25 years or so later, I bought my own copy (as well as some for my friends) to carry the tradition on with my own daughter. It is a beautiful story with beautiful illustration. Also, perfect for military families (of which I am now a part of).

My mother read this book for me as a child so I bought it for my children. It had been so long since I had read the book I had forgotten the values of keeping your promises, sacrifice, and service to country that were contained in it. These important values make this book even more important to me.

My wife wanted it for her son's to have after she used it in a storytelling event for children. Her native home is in the area described so beautifully in this lovely Christmas story. Gloria Houston is a wonderful story teller.

I was so glad to find this book as it was a favorite of mine when teaching elementary library classes of children. It is probably best for 6 to 9 year olds, but any age can enjoy the artwork precious story.

Each year, my daughter, who is now almost eight years old, helps me select Christmas titles from our public library. We read Christmas stories almost every night during the month leading up to Christmas and one of our favorites is "The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree: An Appalachian Story". It is a calm, peaceful, quiet book in that it helps one to get away from the frantic preparations leading up to Christmas, and instead reminds us to focus on what's truly important.

Set in a small Appalachian town called Pine Grove, Ruthie and her mom eagerly await the return of Ruthie's father from the war. It is their turn to supply the perfect Christmas tree to their town church, as per the town's tradition. When Christmas gets closer and there is no sign of Ruthie's father, Ruthie and her mother embark on a cold and long journey to get the perfect Christmas tree, and in the process, a legend of sorts is born.

With little money to spare, Ruthie's mother again shows the true meaning of the giving Christmas spirit by making Ruthie a most beautiful outfit for her role as the heavenly angel - a gift borne out of dedication, love, and sacrifice. This story had both my daughter and I misty-eyed, and the ending left us feeling warm and happy. A true Christmas classic, this makes our must-read list each year.

This is one of the most well written and poignant children's Christmas books I have ever read. I came across it recently at a neighbors house and enjoyed it so much I searched it out here on Amazon just to leave it a review. I have always loved children's Christmas story books. And at one time I had quite a collection of them on a shelf. But then my son grew up and for now they are just tucked away for hopefully some grand children for me to spoil. Make no mistake about it, this Perfect Christmas tale will be there front and center. This book really does manage to accomplish it all in touching us by actually keeping it simple. There are no modern problems instilled in this tale. No drug use, prejudice, bullying, etc. It's just a really beautiful tale with a heart warming story that is written very well, and illustrated colorfully and exquisitely. I truly sense that there isn't a grown up out there that wouldn't feel like they have created a moment worthy of their memoirs in reading this to a starry eyed youngin'. I only wish I had known about this book when my son was still a toddler. Truly a tale that is destined to become any little ones favorite, as well as your own. Absolutely delightful, and highly recommended.. : )

One of the most beautiful children's books I've ever read, Christmas-themed or not. The writing and the illustrations are both wonderful.
