Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1–3—Piglet Patty, new to Farmer Wu's farm, demonstrates qualities associated with those born in the Year of the Pig. The sociable animal quickly learns about her new home and the other Chinese zodiac animals that live there, including the ox, horse, sheep, and dog. However, her impulsive, stubborn, and inquisitive nature resists learning the manners that her aunts and uncles try to teach her. Then Farmer Wu's jade ring disappears, and even cousin dog's sniffing cannot locate it. With Mama and Papa Pig's encouragement, Patty uses her intelligence to sneak out of the barnyard, find the farmer's misplaced glove, and follow its strange scent to the compost heap. With determination, she recovers the missing ring. Her success earns her the respect and acceptance of the farmer, his family, and her barnyard cousins. Computer-generated graphics feature bright colors, angular cartoon figures, and visually appealing textures. The text, written in short sentences, large font, and easy vocabulary, would be suitable for beginning readers, but the many bold illustrations peppered across the pages disrupt the book's flow. Although brief notes mention the origin of the Chinese zodiac and qualities associated with the pig, the purpose of this original story is not to inform but to entertain. Purchase where Chin's The Year of the Dog (Immedium, 2006) is popular or where interest in these zodiac animals is high.—Julie R. Ranelli, Kent Island Branch Library, Stevensville, MD

Review

“Jeremiah Alcorn illustrates the book with expressive angular cartoon characters, capturing the emotions of the animals and animals on their adventures… he illustrates with humor and gentleness the traits of Patty: inquisitiveness, resilience, intelligence, stubbornness and courage. Patty's character, as well as the other animal and human characters in the book, shines through his simple bright cartoons...readers young and old will enjoy this journey through the remarkable Year of the Pig.” - ForeWord Magazine

More About the Author

Hi! I'm the author of a graphic novel on 9-11, sports commentary on Yao Ming and the Tao, and more than a dozen children's picture books.

I love creating stories that both kids and adults can get a kick out of (and enjoy countless times), and collaborating with amazing artists who bring these brave new worlds to life.

Themes range from trains, monsters (www.monsterisle.net), pirates, and a rainbow of animals. I'm currently working on the long awaited sequel to our inspirational martial arts heroine Julie Black Belt (www.julieblackbelt.com).

My kids' books also include the popular annual series The Tales from the Chinese Zodiac. This is the only series in English that features each of the animals of the Lunar New Year. In 2012, we had a lot of fun with Dominic the Dragon, illustrated by Jennifer Wood (www.artofjwood.com). The Year of the Dragon is now an amazingly interactive iOS app available in Apple iTunes. Jennifer also drew the eighth adventure, 2013's Snake and 2014's Horse.

Alina Chau (www.alinachau.com) is the artist of 2015's The Year of the Sheep. Sydney is our new heroine - a lamb who doesn't want to be just a follower!

I'm also the publisher of Immedium (www.immedium.com) which is a San Francisco publisher of children's books and contemporary art and culture. Our titles include the original tales of The Octonauts (www.octonauts.com), which is now a hit animated TV series worldwide and airs on the Disney Channel in the USA and Treehouse TV in Canada. We have also adapted stories from another fun TV show Justin Time, which is broadcast in the USA on PBS Sprout and NBC Kids on Saturday mornings, and on Disney's Family Channel in Canada.

Format: Hardcover
Written is a simple by elegant style by Oliver Chin and joyously illustrated in a cartoon style by Miah Alcore, "The Year Of The Pig: Tales From The Chinese Zodiac" is a 36-page picturebook compendium of stories featuring Patti the Pig and Farmer Wu. The adventures of this remarkable little pig are based upon the 5,000 year legacy of the Chinese Zodiac and translated into a contemporary farm setting and includes creatures taken from the Chinese lunar calendar. "The Year Of The Pig" is a lively entertainment for boys and girls. Also very highly recommended for school and community library picturebook collections from Immedium is "The Year Of The Dog", their first title in a series showcasing the charismatic animals of the Chinese New Year.

I sent this book to my grand children to celebrate Chinese New Year. I haven't actually seen the book, but my family was delighted with it.
