Not to be confused with Devo, Povo (meaning 'people' in Portuguese) is the production pairing of Lars Vissing and Anders Peter Andreason.
After all the Finnish jazz explorations recently, Povo are Denmark's representatives on the European jazz dance scene.
"The Yellow" is their second album, their first "We Are Povo" received international enthusiastic acclaim all over the world, especially in Europe, reached both club-oriented jazz punters and critics alike.
The excellence of Scandinavian musicianship is evident throughout all the members of the band, including Lars (brass), Bastian Sjelberg (bass), Heine Hansen (Piano), Fredrik Lundin (saxes/flute/clarinet) and various drummers.
This intriguing album from the cult Danish group is mainly vocal and features the legendary Andy Bey on four tracks, two of which are Povo originals.
Other vocalists include Saidah Baba Talibah and Temu Bacot. Bacot is particularly strong on the surprising cover choice of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", along with "She Brings the Rain", originally by Krautrock legends Can.
Of the eleven tracks only "Freedive" is instrumental: this hypnotic horn led shuffler builds and builds.
Bey appears on slowish update on his classic "Celestial Blues" as well as the quirky "Pretentious".
Bob Dylan's cover is an upbeat Jazz groove and has a catchy horn riff.
This is a set that takes a few plays to sink in as it is more mid/down tempo paced, but is strangely compelling.
