Book Description

Author Laila Lucent talks about her book, The Yoga Stripper: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcuQtmqwkeU

Laila reads The Yoga Stripper aloud: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6or4gU0L9k

As heard on Penn Jillette's (of Penn and Teller) podcast: Penn's Sunday School. Ep. 58 In Porn You Get Two Names)

“Healthy eating, daily yoga, a determined mental attitude and getting a lot of money off of wasted men on weekends is the key to success."

Jobless, heartbroken and broke, new college graduate Laila Lucent packs up her car and drives alone across the country to her new life as a Las Vegas stripper.

In an empowering, intelligent and hilarious memoir of self-discovery, 22-year-old Laila takes us deep inside the best, most infamous, strip club in Las Vegas, the Spearmint Rhino.

From living with homeless drug addicts, to practicing yoga on the beaches of Costa Rica, from threesomes with wealthy foreigners, to dancing at the best music festivals in the world, The Yoga Stripper is a wickedly funny reverse fairy tale where morality is flexible, money is fast, and clothing is discouraged.

Laila writes with incredible wit that makes the book hard to put down! Visualizing the author's growth from sin city's most scandalous industry to yoga instructor to everyday life was very entertaining. A must read!

3.0 out of 5 stars A fast read, cringe worthy but in a good way April 15, 2013
By Mindme
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
You won't find the secret to life in this book. But you will find an enjoyable tale of one woman's sojourn into the world of high class Vegas stripping. Chapters tend to alternate between her club work, glimpses of her past, and her life as your average Vegas denizen. When the author tries to analyze her motivations for becoming a Vegas stripper, a bit of post-hoc justification creeps in. But, hey, we all do that. The best part is how she evolves her strategy for getting the most money out of men in the club. Polite society likes to portray these women as hapless victims. But it's clear from this book if there are any victims, it's the men who allow themselves to be manipulated out of hundreds or thousands of dollars of cash. All for a pair of pert boobs in their face. But, hey, they go in with their eyes wide open. Anyone who has ever been in a Hooters or a strip club will certain cringe at how easy we men can be parted from our money by even an unconvincing act of ego stroking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gary April 7, 2013
By Gary
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I started reading the Yoga stripper around 11PM one night as I was trying to fall asleep before an early meeting in the AM. Reading always helps me fall asleep but not this time. I blazed through the book before realizing tomorrow morning was going to come sooner than planned :-/

As an infrequent strip club visitor (maybe 2x) I have always been what the author describes as a "Captain save a bitch". After 3 hours in Rhino VIP and six drinks later I left with my wallet $1400 lighter but certainly not before offering my moralizing speech (I know, contradictory...) about how `she' does not have to do this blah blah blah. I left feeling the stripper was a victim and I was doing my part to help her get `out of this life'.

The Yoga Stripper certainly offered a much needed look into the psych of a stripper and the interworking's of a strip club (I wish I realized the dancers keep all the money before I tipped 40% lol). As Laila explained the basic tactics in a stripper's arsenal I soon realized that I was more of a victim than the stripper.

The book flowed very nicely and the conversational tone of the book made the characters very easy to sympathize and relate to which made the book impossible to put down. Laila's journey has offered a new found respect for strippers as they are one courageous, empowered, and socially talented group of women.

3.0 out of 5 stars Insights into the Dark Side November 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The author considers herself a writer and lived in Las Vegas for two years working in an upscale club as a stripper. And of course one has to wonder if part of the motivation came from her desire to write the book. It shows no great literary talent but is a straight forward, simplistic account of her experiences. In places the dialogue is so simplistic that it becomes almost laughable. But on the other hand, she tells it like it is. She does not brag or glorify her prowess as a stripper, but includes some of her embarrassing failures and rejections. At one point she finds herself scrambling for twenty one-dollar bills a disgruntled client tosses in her face. And throughout the book we see the courage and self-confidence she must muster to come on to men she does not desire. After all, it is a salesman' s game of selling one's self. The book provides a clear and unbiased look into a world most of us would otherwise never see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and inspiring! January 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Laila brings humor and a down-to-earth radical honesty to her memoir. It's hard to put down! This book is perfect for anyone who has any stereotypes about strippers (everyone!) and any woman who has ever wondered what it might be like. Who knows, you might even find yourself inspired to a new career.

5.0 out of 5 stars New outlook on my sexuality March 29, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This woman is offically awesome. I loved her book and her outlook on life, and I would be busting out laughing at random times in public while reading her escapades. She had me thinking about and double checking my womanly powers. While this is a route of life that will probably never happen to me, I loved that she had the guts to just go and achieve whatever she wanted and then wrote about it for all of us to see.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read March 31, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A quick, fun read about the ups and downs of stripping in Vegas to support writing and yoga practice. Good insight into how the clubs are run and how the guys are played for cash. I read a large chunk of it in a Seattle hotel lobby and it pulled me in enough that I was a little stunned and dazed to step outside to a view of the Space Needle, not the hustle and bustle of the strip.

I enjoyed the "strippers" perspective. It actually helped changed some of my thoughts and opinions of strippers and has kind of changed my whole mentality about strippers.
