These real -millions of years old- fossils are enclosed in a cool “brick” and are revealed by using the supplied scraping and brush tools (similar to what real paleontologists use). Young paleontologists then take a closer look at these fossils with the enclosed magnifying glass and learn fascinating details about each fossil using the provided fun fact cards. Dig real fossils is an exciting and fascinating introduction to paleontology and is sure to be a sensation with children of all ages. 4 real fossils. Brachiopod, shark tooth, ammonite, squid shell - fossils are millions of years old. 4 collector cards that match the fossils and give descriptions. Great introduction to paleontology. Use the wooden tools to find the real fossils in the enclosed brick (sand).

This is a great product but can get a little messy. My 5 year old loved digging out the fossils, although it did take a little time. This product highly recommended and worth the money.

.. but my daughter says the hammer and chisel could have been better. We went to daddy's tool box instead.

Your fossil lover will have tons of fun with this! Takes a lot of patience though! My 4 year old was a little impatient.

This was a gift. Let me say that I'm glad I didn't pay for it or I would be mad!

The sand block is not difficult to get through. With a little parental elbow grease we got all 4 fossils out in less than half an hour. I know part of the "fun" is the digging but I have no patience for that and neither does my six year old. Put down a plastic tablecloth or garbage bag to work on. This is messy!

We found the little brachiopod shell first. And I do mean little. Smaller than a dime. But nicely detailed and my son thought it's smallness was cute. So that was good. It went downhill from there. We next found the squid shell which looked more like a fossilized ear plug. Not much detail to it at all. And kids are very literal. This didn't look like the picture so my son was convinced it wasn't the right thing and he kept expecting to find a squid shell that looked like the picture on the box. Not gonna happen, kid.

Our next find was the ammonite shell. This was a big disappointment. We have bought larger, nicely detailed ammonite shells from the rock and fossil shop downtown for $5. The ammonite shell we found in this kit was (again) smaller than a dime and had no detail at all. It looks like a rock with a vaguely spiral shape. And it looked a bit fake. Almost like molded plastic? I don't know. The only fossils I've ever seen are polished and pretty in a retail shop. So perhaps with a bit of polishing this one would look nice but (again) looked nothing like the picture on the box.

The shark's tooth was a shark's tooth. Tiny but in nice shape. We've found larger ones during walks on the beach. So the shark's tooth in this kit didn't dazzle us at all.

The information cards are nice and have a spot to display your fossils.

Fossils were VERY small and most were broken pieces (like a broken sharks tooth). Like the stuff you throw out because you can not sell it, they slap it in a sand block and sell it to you. You get four real fossils but they are of dubious quality.
