Book Description

WHO... OR WHAT... IS ZUL?

THE ZUL ENIGMA, J M Leitch's debut sci fi thriller, awarded Book of the Month by E-thriller.com, is provoking passionate feedback: "... chillingly possible. An intelligent and riveting read which left me with a lasting sense of unease"

"...it absolutely blew my mind into a bazillion pieces" and "by far, one of the best books I've ever read."

'It took Scott Fuller a full five minutes to recover from the shock. A relative of the infamous Dr Carlos Maiz, the man charged with committing murder on the largest scale in the history of mankind, had hunted him down wanting to talk. He inhaled a deep breath before returning the call.'

The Zul Enigma, best selling futuristic science fiction thriller, seamlessly weaves New Age beliefs with hard, physics facts. Set in 2068 it spans two generations following a quest to expose the perpetrator behind a cataclysmic event that takes place in 2012, changing the world forever.

In March 2012, when an alien entity claiming to represent the Galactic Federation contacts Dr Carlos Maiz, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, he thinks it's a hoax. But Zul persuades Carlos that, without his intervention, the coming month of December will not just mark the end of the year... it will be the end of the world.

Carlos, doing battle with his own demons as well as with a sceptical boss, NASA, the National Security Agency, National Intelligence and the President of the USA who wants him committed to a mental asylum, races the ticking clock to set up a global initiative to avert Zul's horrific prediction. But when a monstrous apocalypse of a different nature altogether brings the planet to its knees, rather than being lauded for saving humanity Carlos is accused of destroying it... and of inventing Zul.

Fifty-five years later, Rachael Harris makes a disturbing discovery. She is related to the infamous Carlos Maiz. The more she learns, however, the more convinced she is that he was the victim of a sophisticated conspiracy. Delving deep and tracking down two of his old associates she uncovers the hideous reality underlying the events of that frightful day in December 2012, revealing a tale of global deception for a prize of absolute power.

Underpinned by a theme of betrayal, this dystopian novel is set against a backdrop of climate change, overpopulation, world war, alien encounters, presidential plots and a new world order. A venomous twist reveals the most horrific conspiracy one could ever imagine and Zul is behind it.

'I was there, damn you. I saw it with my own eyes. And it was horrific. And of course it was wrong. It was the worst thing I could ever, ever, have imagined.'

'Now it's too late. It doesn't matter who you tell or what you say. No one will ever believe you.'

What people are saying about The Zul Enigma:

"Unique and stunning sci-fi conspiracy story"
"I was gripped right from the start of this excellent sci-fi mystery. The storyline is remarkable - but believable - and the writing style is absolutely pitch perfect."
"... makes you question yourself and the world you live in."
"The characters are very well developed and the plot keeps you off balance with unpredictability and intrigue. The story is believable, the dialogue realistic, and the physics plausible. Get a copy. You won't be sorry."

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The Zul Enigma is my first novel, a futuristic thriller. It took me 7 1/2 years to complete. It started out as a simple idea but evolved over the years into something quite different - a story with a shocking twist - that I would never have dreamed of at the start of my writing journey.

Because the underlying plot is so incredible I somehow had to draw in my readers to convince them that it might... just might... be plausible. The best way of achieving this, I thought, was to cement the characters and action in reality. As a result, I had to conduct a tremendous amount of research, which I very much enjoyed, especially the part that involved reading about the latest physics theories.

Visit my website at thezulenigma.com to read the Fact or Fiction? page describing which theories, concepts, technology, organisations and establishments mentioned in the book do exist. Most of them are real. You can also sign up on the website to receive e-mail notifications about my latest blog, published short stories and other interesting news.

The thing that excited me about writing this book was how the characters ended up driving the plot. I'd heard other authors say this but never understood it until it happened to me. When you think about it, it's obvious. If you're pretending to be one of your characters you have to speak, think and act like them, meaning that they'll do things their way, not yours. And this is how they take over... pushing your book in directions you would never have imagined.

I love this aspect of the writing process, opening my mind to the characters I create and trusting them to move the action forward in an unpredictable and exciting way.

Should you decide to buy a copy of The Zul Enigma, I truly hope you'll enjoy it. After all, I wrote it for you.

From the Back Cover

A cataclysmic event on 21st December 2012, end date of the Mayan calendar, and the world was changed forever.

Was it an act of extraterrestrial intervention or the twisted scheme of a disturbed individual?

55 years later, Rachael Harris is convinced that the brilliant Dr Carlos Maiz, former Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, is the victim of an elaborate conspiracy and embarks on a mission to clear his name. Helped by 2 survivors, Rachael uncovers a horrifying global deception that earned its perpetrators the ultimate prize - absolute power.

Seamlessly weaving together New Age beliefs and scientific fact, the story unfolds against the ominous background of an overpopulated world beset by climate change and threatened by the ravages of war.

The Zul Enigma is a gripping read with a monstrous twist that will leave you stunned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and gripping February 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
Much has been made of the fast approaching end of the Mayan calendar on December 21, 2012. As an amateur astronomer I place very little significance to the date other than it is the winter solstice and the longest night of the year. However, the event has provided abundant fodder for writers around the world. Some of the works aren't worth much and will pass quickly from the shelves. Others, like the Zul Enigma will be around for a long time.

The Zul Enigma by J. M. Leitch spins an intriguing story beginning with the receipt of an email to Carlos Maiz, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs purporting to be from an alien source. Carlos' first reaction is to ignore the message but is disturbed by the obvious breakdown in security. However, the messages keep arriving and after an investigation it appears that all of the emails originate on Carlos' own computer.

A video attached to one of the emails warns of a major catastrophic event on the 21st of December. As this multi-generational novel progresses, Carlos is put under house arrest by the President of the United States and in the end is thought to be the greatest mass murderer of all time. I found the second part of the novel to be the more interesting, but that is a personal bias.

The Zul Enigma is interesting and is one of the more intelligent attempts to deal with what many feel will be a catastrophic event at the end of this year. While there is no evidence that the ending of the Mayan calendar will result in anything more than a resetting of their time measurement, it is fun to fantasize otherwise.

This is J. M. Leitch's first novel. As I read, there are places that are awkwardly handled. The arrival of the first email message is a case in point. This is not meant to be critical. I have started two novels, and I have the same problem when dealing with a situation that is hard to believe. Having said that, the book is remarkably polished for a first attempt.

There is enough suspense, intrigue, betrayal, murder, and general mayhem to keep a reader that loves page-turner books happy. I certainly hope that Leitch has another novel in her.

I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great sci-fi novel that I thoroughly enjoyed! November 16, 2012

I found the Zul Enigma to be a great book that at first mixed the spiritual with the scientific. The characters were well developed and very believable. I read some of the other reviews, and to me there is no hate preached in this book but quite the opposite. People talk in the book like they would in real life, and sometimes real life talk isn't pretty. A lot of the reviews gave away the fact that the poor end up dying enmasse caused by the Israelis. Personally I would have used a group not associated with any particular religion because I would have foreseen the negative reviews based on just that one fact.
I would have made the culprits perhaps a group of wealthy conspirators that had been pulling the world's strings for centuries with members from different nations around the world. That way no one group would have been blamed. Of course singling out one group will garner more bad reviews and also get more people to buy the book to see what it's all about. It's a double edged sword.
If the Arabs were the culprits, another group would have bashed this book, and it goes for whaterver one group you pick. It might have been safer to blame it on the CIA or whatever. I found the whole story intriguing, and it kept me turning the pages to find out what will happen next. I enjoyed the high tech described in the book and the way the story flowed. The personal problems of the characters weren't too overdone and I found them to be very lifelike. I won't get into the details of the book but suffice it to say that a lot of its concepts and ideas I found very fascinating, and I also liked the fact that the book wasn't too short like the trend in most books nowadays. For me it was time well worth spent and I would definitely urge others to read it. Well done!

1.0 out of 5 stars A book to forget as soon as you read it. April 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Though this book was interesting to read, it soon became clear that it was anti-American, anti-free enterprise, anti-conservative and maybe even anti-Semitic. The writer states he is British. It seems funny to me that the Jewish religion is used in this book to advance the plot. Also that Islam is looked at with little scrutiny, but Zionism is knocked. The way the story talks about America and the Military is very negative. The author is also very much for the class warfare that is being used to divide America.

To me though I enjoyed the plot of the story, all the political bull in this story, makes me feel that I wasted my money would never read anything written by this author again.

Just to let you know as negative as I seem toward this book, because of the way it was written, I'm being nice! There is so much more I would like to say, but I would be giving away the story and ending, and I do not feel that would be fair to anyone that still wants to read this book!

More About the Author

When Mum picked me up after my first day of primary school I was in tears. 'Whatever's the matter?' she asked. I spat out words between heaving staccato sobs. They were an accusing finger. 'YOU said I'd learn to read!'

It took much longer than I expected... but I did learn to read and I've not stopped since. I also learned to write and I published my first novel in 2011, The Zul Enigma (www.thezulenigma.com).

As to my background? Well, I was born just outside London, England, and moved to Asia where I've lived half my life. I now spend my time between Singapore, Assam in North East India, Bali in Indonesia and the UK.

In addition to reading and writing I enjoy hanging out with my family and friends. I love laughing and try to spend as much time doing that as I can. I think it keeps me healthy! My hobbies are reading, tennis and travelling. I also enjoy good food and wine. Mmm...
