My family bought a quarter acre of land [1969] outside of Granite Falls, on the Mountain Loop Highway, on the way to Monte Cristo ~ my younger brother broke a leg in a sledding mishap (stumps don't move out of your way), and acquired this book while being laid up in Everett General Hospital. He somehow contacted the author, who visited him and autographed his copy :)

I was born and lived most of my adult life near Monte Cristo, Washington. I'm fascinated with local history. I felt, as I read Elof Norman's accounting of his experiences living in that area, like I was right there with him experiencing everything that he, his friends and neighbors did. The people who populated Monte Cristo during that time period were amazing. I wish I were among them. What an incredible life. I highly recommend this book! It sheds light about daily life during that timeframe with people who were courageous enough to move their family to a new continent on the hope of greater prosperity and who worked hard to maintain daily living.
