I have purchased this book within a curriculum that I study for my business. I am an Image Consultant and I read in depth writings regarding art, principles applied in art and also applied to the art of dress (style & fashion).

The author is very keen on the Principles, Elements of design, the relationships between them and explains very well each one so they can be understood fully. The writing contains analysis of the principles with a lot of art pictures, including contemporary art - before 1951 when the book was published. At the end of each chapter, there are questions and/or exercises.

At the beginning of the book (pages 69-78) the author created a test called: "Graves Design Judgement Test" that it is recommended to take at the beginning - I did it before reading the book - to see how you stand with little knowledge. There are choices of designs from pictures representing drawings, small paitings, abstract art where the reader is asked to make a choice of a design.

The author warns at the beginning of the book that the principles of design are not respected anymore (1951). Today, there are extremely few who are able to interpret and further more to apply them consistently in their creations. You can see ugliness everywhere from art galleries to fashion shows, where the artist/designer does not have idea of how to apply the principles and elements of design.

I have read this book, to be able to help my clients create harmonious individual styles and refine their fashion tastes.
I recommend the book to everyone who wants to study the principles, elements and relationships between them in design, visual arts, decor, fashion design but also for everyone who wants to learn how to dress and should have a thorough study to understand what works and what doesn't.

This is a fantastic book. It's out of print and was originally printed in the early fifty's. It was recommended by an Artist Tony Couch in his watercolor book. I have found it very helpful in understanding all the basics of design that very few books get into. Not only dose the book get into all the elements but it also has questions and exercises at the end of each chapter to help you work though it.

Classic book with great examples for the beginning design classes. Beware some sites are trying to sell the second edition for over $500 and you can get them for $20. The first edition maybe worth the high price tag.
