Comment: PAPERBACK, good used copy, BUT I find small ink marks in the margins on four pages, and paper is browning. previous owner's name. SCHROYER, TRENT. The critique of domination. The origins and development of critical theory. Boston: Beacon Press, 1975, 282pp., . Cover design by Richard C. Bartlett . BP513. Cover price $4.45. - To judge from Henry Pachter's 1974 review, this would be considered a document of self-styled marxist in-fighting. Or perhaps part of the struggle to make the Germanic vocabulary of critical theory accessible to Americans and thus useful in the critique of American capitalism. Paul Wiles recommended going directly back to Habermas' Knowledge and Human Interest, if not to the biographical approach of Martin Jay. Only the reviewer for Theory and Society, an ally of the Telos group, was willing to dive in to Schroyer's project and seriously debate the issues of "technocratic domination." A 1970s document of the transformation of German philosophy through the emigration of the Frankfurt theorists. - Schroyer later taught at Ramapo College in New Jersey for 35 years and has published and taught on sustainability and alternatives to western development.
