What to know what the NBA was like in the late 1970s, read John Power's THE SHORT SEASON: A BOSTON CELTICS DIARY, 1977-1978. There were players giving everything (Dave Cowans), players mailing it in (Sidney Wicks), players past their prime (John Havlicek, Dave Bing), and players along for the ride (Kevin Stacom). The result is one of the worst teams in Celtics history. Tommy Heinsohn is fired mid-season, Red almost takes the Knicks GM job, and everyone hates owner Irv Levin. The road trips are unbelievable - 11 in a row on the road! The weather is record-setting (the blizzard of 1978). The players fly domestic and check with Havlicek for the best restaurants and discos after the games. The only ray of light is after the season with the their second pick of the first round - after they had selected Freeman Williams - the Celtics drafted the rights to Larry Bird.

Wanna know what life once was like for a sports writer, covering a pro team? This book will tell you. It is as inside as inside gets with this tome, folks. A great time capsule of a bygone era.
