Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Colette, Violet, Pamela, Nicky, and Paulina are the Thea Sisters at Mouseford Academy; they study with Thea Stilton, journalist and equally famous sister of the famed Geronimo Stilton. The new school year brings new students, including siblings Vanilla and Vic, children of wealthy businesswoman Vissia De Vissen, who claims to be concerned about the environment. When an orca threatens the local fishermen, however, the Thea Sisters discover that Vissia has plans for the orca and other sea creatures, including the whales of Whale Island, that bode no good for the environment. Thea Stilton is credited as the author, but the story was created by a team of Italian writers and artists and translated by Nanette McGuinness for Papercutz. The story centers on the Thea Sisters rather than on Thea Stilton, who makes only a brief appearance in this book, but most readers won’t care. They’ll enjoy the action and mystery in this colorful graphic novel. Fans of the chapter books will also enjoy the additional adventures in this new series. Grades 2-4. --Kat Kan

The Secret of Whale Island is a very great written book. It was so good, I couldn't put my kindle down! I loved how the author was so descriptive in the words she used. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves reading Geronimo Stilton or Thea Stilton books. The one thing I didn't like was that the words were so small so I had trouble reading the words, so l double clicked on the box I was reading and I had trouble going to the next box. Otherwise I loved everything else.

The Secret of Whale Island is the newest graphic novel in the Thea Stilton series. Originally published in Italy, this series is published in the US by Papercutz and this review is based on a copy provided by the publisher free of charge. In this episode, you meet the Thea Sisters, five female teenage mice who attend Mouseford Academy where Thea Stilton teaches journalism. Thea is not present this time, so the main action involves the Thea Sisters as they try to uncover the secret of the island that is home to their boarding school. The storyline is engaging and there is a lot of action and dialogue to keep young readers entertained. The illustrations are full of bright colors and the cartoon characters have lots of expression. The series is very popular among the 2nd to 4th graders at my school. The girls especially appreciate that Geronimo Stilton's sister, Thea, is now a main character in her own series. For both girls and boys, this graphic novel series is a good transitional bridge to the Geronimo and Thea Stilton chapter book series. As a librarian, I appreciate the inexpensive price of these hardcover books.

Set in the world of Geronimo Stilton, THEA STILTON #1: THE SECRET OF WHALE ISLAND follows the adventures not of the famous mouse Geronimo, but his sister Thea. However, in THEA STILTON #1: THE SECRET OF WHALE ISLAND, Thea Stilton is not seen for much of the book. Instead the story focuses on the Thea Sisters, five female teenage mice who attend the Mouseford Academy where Thea is a journalism teacher. There’s some danger surrounding whale island as a lone orca keeps ramming into ships for no apparent reason. Meanwhile, the Mouseford Academy is all abuzz as Vanilla and Vic Vissen, children of multi-billionaire cosmetic queen Vissia de Vissen, arrive at Mouseford. The illustrations in the book are very colorful and the storyline is full of action. Although the series is definitely marketed towards girls, THEA STILTON #1: THE SECRET OF WHALE ISLAND is a story that boys will probably enjoy, too. I’d guess the reading level for the book is for those in 2nd-5th grades. Personally, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to reading another book in the Thea Stilton series.

Like the regular kids books Thea Stilton graphic novel is even better than Geronimo. I would suggest that anyone who hasn't read hard cover novel Journey to Atlantis yet to read this first as this graphic novel introduces first encounter the Thea Sisters have with the Vissen family who also appear in the Atlantis book.

The start of new school year introduces new students to Mouseford Academy and the Thea Sister is in charge of showing them around. Thea Sisters tour is interrupted by a killer whale problem off coast of whale island and the secret the Vissen family is hidden about why the whale is separated from its mate. A mystery the Thea Sisters won't rest until it solved.

My son loves all the Thea sisters books. (He is 6 and we do them as read-alouds). He loves the pictures, mysteries, travel, and the positive qualities of all the Thea sisters. Each girl has a special talent and a confidence in herself that he finds inspiring. My son also loves to travel and is looking forward to someday visiting all the amazing places that the Thea sisters have gone!

As this is a graphic novel it may be best to get it in soft-back like traditional graphic novels. I bought the hardcover because it was only a little more, but it appears to be more of a children's book than a graphic novel in hard-cover form. It some of the fun out of it for my nine year old daughter who is suddenly into "graphic novels". Otherwise, good series.

This graphic novel is a little, well, cheesier than I was hoping, with a few girl-boy things going on (it's centered around a dance) but it also has a definite bad guy, and you can see the tension between Vanilla (or Ruby, as the books call her) and the Thea Sisters that will only grow with time. It had good illustrations and a great story, and apart from the awkwardness is a great story.
