Editorial Reviews

Review

The Theater of Tony Kushner: Living Past Hope is an insightful and thorough examination of the Kushner canon. In it James Fisher illuminates the renowned playwrights works and influential aspects of his life and career, smartly capitalizing upon readers familiarity with Kushners hit play Angels in America by using it as a basis for comparison with his other works....
–Mary L. Cutler, University of North Dakata Modern Drama, Spring 2002

Fishers volume...makes abundantly clear through sheer information that the relationship between Kushner and Brecht is begging to be explored within the German Studies classroom and scholarship.
–Norman Roessler

This book is a must for anyone interested in the theater and for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of Kushner, the man and the writer. While Fishers research is exhaustive and his analysis deep and probing, his work is accessible and enjoyable. Fisher is that rare scholar whose work is meaningful yet doesnt intentionally confound its readers in an attempt to appear legitimate.
Gay Peoples Chronicle

The great virtue of this book is Fishers attempt to present Kushner not as a gay playwright but as one of the prominent political dramatists in the US today.
CHOICE

A valuable book for anyone interested in American drama...offering crisp explications and fact-filled stage histories of Kushners varied canon. ... My vote is for James Fisher to write the continuing history of Kushners prolific and prophetic theater. No one is more qualified.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good comprehensive portrait of Tony Kushner, March 21, 2005
By
Actually I would rate this item a bit higher. Perhaps 4.5 stars? It's very well done, full of important information, detailed, and, the most important aspect, intelligent. I am also very happy because that's what I really wanted and needed, that's the thing that I expected when I ordered it. And I'm definitely not disappointed. A real comprehensive portrait indeed. Proper for scholars, drama and theater lovers, well, everybody, who's interested in Tony Kushner's works.

1.0 out of 5 stars Difficult but ultimately empty, September 14, 2010
I really struggled with this author's writing style - extremely long sentences made reading comprehension an end in itself rather than a means to communicate. Worse, in place of providing commentary or insight, the bulk of the essays just describes the action of the play. Some little commentary is laid out in the introduction and largely repeated in the following chapters. Not what I was looking for.
