Book Description

074253913X 978-0742539136 October 16, 2009 Sixth Edition
Theatre: Its Art and Craft is an introductory theatre text focusing on theatre practitioners and their processes. Using an accessible tone and a focused exploration of how theatre artists work, the book covers playwrights, directors, actors, designers of sets, costumes, props, lights, sound, and new technology, as well as the varying roles of scholars, critics, and dramaturgs. Appropriate for beginning theatre majors, minors, or non-majors, Theatre: Its Art and Craft helps students understand how theatre happens, who makes it, and what they do.

Updated with new statistics, references, and photographs, the sixth edition now features an overhauled design section: the authors have divided the design chapter into two parts: one focused on the tactile elements of design (sets, costumes, props) and the second on the temporal elements (lights, sound, and new technologies).

Editorial Reviews

Review

Archer, Gendrich, and Hood have done it again! Theatre: Its Art and Craft is a terrific book that combines well-organized and readable text with significant illustrations into one affordable package for the beginning theatre student. (Kimberly Poppiti )

Praise for the fifth edition: I have adopted many texts on the subject of general theatre over thirty-six years. This text is superior to all of them. It speaks to the reader as if they were an audience member, theatre artist, or a casual observer. Fromthe nature of art and criticism to the practical application of the theatre art form, this book clearly provides all the necessary information to assist in the edification of eager minds. Bravo! to the authors.... (Bradley W. Sabelli )

The sixth edition has been updated with new statistics, references, and photographs. 4.0 out of 5 stars Fair price, decent text, January 7, 2006

I am a college professor and use this book in my intro to theatre course. It is inexpensive and the students find it easy to read and enjoyable. Not the best book in the world, but it works great as an introductory text.
