Book Description

August 1, 2006
A captivating portrait of the crucible of magic, science, and religion at the court of the doomed dreamer Rudolf II in Renaissance Prague.

At the end of the sixteenth century, the greatest philosophers, alchemists, astronomers, and mathematicians of the day flocked to Prague to work under the patronage of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The Theatre of the World is the enchanting story of Rudolf II, an emperor more interested in the great talents and minds of his times than in the exercise of his power. Rarely leaving Prague Castle, he gathered around him a galaxy of famous figures: the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, the German mathematician Johannes Kepler, and the English magus John Dee.

Entranced, like Hamlet, by the new Renaissance learning, Rudolf found it nearly impossible to make decisions. He faced the threats of religious discord and the Ottoman Empire, along with deepening melancholy and an ambitious younger brother. As a result, he lost his empire and nearly his sanity, but he enabled Prague to enjoy a golden age of peace and creativity before Europe was engulfed in the Thirty Years War.

The Theatre of the World is a beguiling and dramatic human story filled with angels and devils, high art and low cunning, talismans and stars. It offers a captivating perspective on a pivotal moment in the history of Western Civilization.

Editorial Reviews

Review

‘Convincing proposal that one of the most inept and eccentric European rulers in a turbulent age was the ultimate promoter of the arts and sciences in Western culture…
A revelatory biography, particularly for Americans whose history classes treat Eastern Europe as the far side of the world.’
Kirkus Review

‘Deftly sketched…Marshall argues convincingly that [Rudolf’s] intellectual legacy bridged the gap between the medieval and modern worlds’ .
Publishers Weekly

‘With considerable yet arresting detail, Marshall gives concrete evidence of the eccentricity——and cultural significance——of this odd royal figure, at the same time individualizing the peculiarities and contributions to art and science of the men Rudolf drew into his circle…’
Booklist

‘An intriguing mix of philosopher, historian, biographer and travel writer Peter Marshall harnesses these diverse interests to bring about a laser-like focus on his chosen subject…The Theatre of the World is a fascinating evocation of the brilliance and paradoxes of Rudolf’s court… With Peter’s deft touch, [it is] a read as enthralling as any thriller. His enthusiasm is the key — unlocking the past and bringing it to life in a riveting
and accessible way.’
— Roger Malone, Tavistock Times (UK)

"Enchanting. . . . Marshall beautifully captures a court and city whose fermenting mixture of magic, science and religion was crucial to the transition from medieval to modern thought."
— Maclean's

"A magical moment . . . when anything seemed possible. Mr. Marshall brings it all wonderfully to life."
— Wall Street Journal

"An admirable and fascinating book."
— The Observer

"[An] excellent biography . . . Marshall succeeds brilliantly in capturing the spirit of the age in which Rudolf lived and the complex character of the man he describes as 'one of the last magi.'"
— The Guardian

"Marshall's account of this weird but free-thinking court, where modern science melded with the occult, glitters with interest on every page."
— The Independent
