Book Description

September 4, 2001
So you're doing King Lear and want to know the best way to get the maximum effect for Gloucester's gouged-out eyes. Or A Midsummer Night's Dream and can't figure out makeup for Puck. Or any number of plays featuring ghosts, zombies, beat-up boxers, otherworldly creatures, or just folks who've had some really bad luck lately. This lavishly illustrated guide to the dark side of special-effects makeup will walk you step by step through the process.

Theatrical FX Makeup is written for anyone with a general interest in trying some (literally) eye-popping makeup effects on their own, especially theatre and film professionals. It features dozens of makeup effects accompanied by simple directions for creating them with both professional-quality makeup supplies and items easily found around the house or local supermarket. Unlike most makeup books, this one is play specific. In addition to the directions for each effect, you'll discover a list of show and character-specific productions for which the effect is appropriate, along with variations to help you adapt each makeup to your specific needs.

The book also comes with a companion CD-ROM, which shows all of the book's illustrations in full color with easy access to the corresponding directions and supply list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Step-by-step makeup directions and a supply list, June 6, 2002
This review is from: Theatrical FX Makeup (Paperback)
Collaboratively written by makeup artist David Sartor and writer, actor, director John Pivovarnick, Theatrical FX Makeup is a practical, hands-on guide to the art and craft of using makeup to create visual effects worthy of professional theater, film, or television productions. From adding fifty years to an actor's age to simulating horrific diseases to disguising gender to creating ghastly visages of the undead, Theatrical FX Makeup is a thorough resource of tips, tricks, and techniques used by talented makeup artists. Black-and-white photographs as well as a color insert section illustrate the uses to which makeup can be put to turn ordinary actors into supernatural beings or horrors from beyond. The accompanying CD-ROM for Windows or Macintosh contains all the book's illustrations in full color with quick and easy access to the appropriate step-by-step makeup directions and a supply list. Theatrical FX Makeup is a highly recommended addition to personal, professional, community theater, and Performance Arts Department reference collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars EASY Fx makeup how -to book, November 9, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Theatrical FX Makeup (Paperback)
I use this book along with Corson's book in my Theatrical makeup class. It's an easy how-to book
for the beginner-to intermediate student; or for anyone interested. I found the images to be harder to use because they are not in color.
